Nebraska was his first scholarship offer, and Martinez accepted quickly.
Today, you've seen Martinez, three games into his Husker career, run for touchdowns of 80, 67 and 46 yards. You've seen a redshirt freshman reinvigorate an entire offense. You're seeing and hearing Martinez in national media circles.

Go ahead and scratch your head.

How did Nebraska land this guy? Someone who's already arguably the Huskers' most electrifying offensive player since their last Heisman Trophy winner, Eric Crouch, in 2001?

The state of California was full of more established, prototypical quarterbacks in that recruiting class -- Matt Barkley (USC), Richard Brehaut (UCLA), Tate Forcier (Michigan), Josh Nunes (Stanford), Jeff Tuel (Washington State), Allan Bridgford (Cal), Ryan Katz (Oregon State), Keith Price (Washington), Derek Carr (Fresno State) and Joe Southwick (Boise State).
Martinez, meanwhile, had only played quarterback for one season at Cajon, "and all they did was run the ball," Huffman said. "There wasn't a whole lot known about (Martinez) other than he was a real freaky athlete."

Martinez then led Centennial to a 15-0 record and the state championship by throwing for 3,000 yards.
Carl Pelini is watching film of another player and notices T-Mart at Cajon and offers him...as a QB. T-Mart commits (his first offer btw). Then T-Mart transfers from mediocre running team (Cajon) to football powerhouse (Centenial) for his senior year. And leads Centenial to an undefeated season, the California championship, and #2 national ranking. AWESOME!!

Great article n.e.! Thanks for posting.

:thumbs anything for Nuance(and the rest of HB of course)

Okay for the record I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT RECRUITING. But does it strike anyone else odd that the DC is out recruiting QBs? Especially when we supposedly had or QB of the future?

1) Its great that Carl is good at spotting talent.

2) Anybody on the recruitment trail can be give a tip that pans out as it did in this place.

3) Where was Watts.

Coaches recruit all over, not just their specialties, says alot about carl for seeing the talent in Tmart that is what Watson would want in a QB for is offense.

I am sure that Carl saw Martinez in film and showed him to some of the other coaches. The article tries to paint the picture, but it probably isn't 100% accurate. I also remember we offered him as an Athlete with the chance at QB, so in a way they may have expected him to end up on D, thus Carl would be more involved with him.

Jason Peter told a story on his show, back when he had one, about Solich recruiting him at his home. As others have noted, coaches recruit all positions.
