The Future of Taylor Martinez

Martinez had a run at the end of the first half where he went for 56 yards and was caught around the KSU 30 yard line. Drive ended in a FG. I think that's the play being referred to here. And yes, the defender had an angle, but that's the way most players are caught when they're running down the sideline. D Robinson hasn't been straight up caught from behind this season just like Martinez, but both have been caught by taking good angles.

Taylor Martinez is the fastest quarterback in all of division 1 football. If others don't agree then that's fine by me. If Herbstreit (my point originally...) feels that mentioning only Robinson will not get caught once he has reached the second level and/or open field then sorry...won't agree with that.

Are you saying you haven't seen Martinez chased down? It happened in the KSU game and in the WKU game, just off the top of my head.

C'mon, when defenders have angles it can deny even the fastest of players. But if it is a straight footrace where Robinson or Martinez break through defenses, neither of those guys are being caught, which is why arguing the difference in their dynamic running ability is just silly. Both are incredible running QBs with outstanding speed.

My original point was calling out Herbstreit for only mentioning that Robinson was his choice because he felt he had an advantage and could not be caught once in the open field. Thought I had said that before but anyway, again to make that statement and only mention Robinsons name is ridiculous. Plain and simple.

Sometimes it doesn't even look like Taylor is running that hard. I don't know if that's his running style or not, but he definitely looks like he could run faster sometimes.

He definitely slows down as he gets to the goal line. That may come back to bite him one of these days. Always run hard all the way into the endzone.

I've seen him do that before.

What I mean is even when he is streaking down the sideline, it looks effortless to him as if he could still go a lot faster. He probably couldn't, it just looks like he could.

To me he looks like the fastest offensive player in the game this season. He's flat out running D-1 corners and safeties. That's pretty rare.

Did anyone else hear ol' Herbstreit on ESPN do the piece comparing Martinez and Denard Robinson? "I would give Denard Robinson more of an advantage, once he gets through that second level of a defense he's not going to be caught from behind."

Herbstreit says he would put Darron Thomas (of Oregon) ahead of both Martinez and Robinson. I'd post the double face palm pic but you get the picture.

Really? Because KSU caught T-Mart from behind on a breakaway run on Thursday. I thought for sure he was going to score, but he ran out of gas and got caught.

Rewatch that video. When Martinez is at the 23, the guy who tackles him is at the 30, and he doesn't catch him until KSU's 35....And even then just gets him by the shoelaces (irony). The deep angle that guy was taking, he was bound to catch him. Martinez did the right thing, there was no cutback, everything was sealed off. That was just good angles by the KSU defense.

+1 to BigWillie. Denard Robinson is clearly the better choice based on the games played thus far. I'd take the Oregon back James ahead of their QB though.

I have a feeling Martinez won't look nearly as fast against Texas. Let's wait for an opponent with a decent defense and some speed.

Tmart is not going to look slow vs Texas or anybody. He very well may not get as many holes or creases to explode through, but when he gets them he's "gone".

I don't get the fuss over Robinson. He's very fast, but not as explosive as Taylor. His throwing is OK, but the only part of his throwing that is better than Taylor is his ability to put touch on short passes. Taylor wants to rifle everything in there, while Robinson has developed a little more patience and touch.

As far as Robinson's throwing though - 3 picks in the red zone against Michigan State. That was the first even semi-decent defense they played, and he and the UM offense could only manage 17 points. Robinson has been WAY over-hyped this season. You're going to see the Michigan offense continue to falter against teams like Iowa and Ohio State.

That said, I don't think Taylor has gone up against a semi-decent defense yet this year. Nobody in the PAC-10 plays defense, KSU's rush defense was 102nd in the country going into the game on Thursday, and the other 3 wins were all bad teams. We'll know how good Taylor (and our entire offense) really is after Saturday night.

Please forgive me my kind sir. You're right...."not nearly as fast" is not "slow". However, I think he'll look every bit as fast as he always has when he has any room to move at all. We'll see...

In the segment, he never gave an opinion of who he would prefer between the two - simply who he thought was faster. It was only a comparison of the two, how they are alike and different. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's as silly as the old 'Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning' argument fans have had for years. Everyone has an opinion, and just because his differs from yours is not exactly facepalm worthy. Even moreso when you are doing it based off nothing actually factual, and nothing more than a personal opinion.

Martinez has done so much this year as a freshman that I really shouldn't care who's faster or who the talking heads at ESPN talk about. As long as we win and don't start looking like 2009 offensively then I could care less what Herbie says! chuckleshuffle
