Good to hear

8:45 p.m.: Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said quarterback Taylor Martinez suffered a bone bruise on his right leg and X-rays were negative, but that the redshirt freshman was OK despite sitting out the second half Saturday.

“He wanted to go back out there,” Pelini said.

Pelini said Martinez was having trouble pushing off, so the Husker staff chose to go with senior Zac Lee.

NU offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said Martinez told him at halftime that he wasn’t full speed. But Watson also said Martinez told him, “If we’re practicing tomorrow, I’m ready to go.”

Pelini said cornerback Alfonzo Dennard suffered what was believed to be a concussion. The junior was replaced by freshman Ciante Evans.

Yeah, Alfonzo has a concussion, and you can't rush a guy back from that. The good news is that Iowa State is 104th in the country (yesterday's game not included) in passing, so if we have to sit Dennard Saturday, I'll be more than comfortable with Ciante in there. There is zero reason to rush Fonzie back to the game when we have capable backups ready to step in.

Taylor probably could have gone back in, but again with the backup thing - I'll be comfortable with Lee playing the whole game next week. He could very easily lead us to victory.

Heck, all he has to do is hand the ball off to Helu. ;)

Bo mentioned in the post game PC that he spoke to Denard and he had regained his wits, which is good news after a concusion. Doesn't mean he needs to rush back but it is a positive sign that it may be a more mild concusion.

Aren't there actually rules of how long you have to sit out after a verified concussion? I thought I read something like that awhile ago, but can't remember where.

Wish Dennard a speedy recovery. I'm guessing Taylor is in for some tender walking for a couple days. That hit did not look pleasant.

So with Martinez, is it a bruised thigh or a foot or ankle injury, I've heard both. I would think that thigh would be an easier injury to overcome.

Agreed, our depth is a wonderful thing to have. Plus getting young guys reps helps for future situations helps their confidence especially in a BIG game like this.

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure the pros have to sit out a week after a diagnosed concussion, but I don't think college has such rules

The pros have to pass certain concussion-related tests to be able to play the next week, but there is no rule that mandates they miss the next week.
