Keeping Martinez Out was Right Decision

Green may have had his struggles today, but he wasn't the reason we almost lost.

Paul may have fumbled at the 15 yard line, but he wasn't the reason we almost lost either.

This game was a collection of mistakes made by the entire team, mistakes that led to ISU being able to keep the game close. We didn't make plays on the ball very well in the secondary, we had turnovers, and our offensive line wasn't getting the big push we needed in order to be really successful running the football.

Green played well enough and didn't make the big mistakes. He had no turnovers (despite a fumble) and had no interceptions.

Having Martinez on the field today would have hindered his rehabilitation process. With an extra week off (heck, maybe even two given that Kansas hasn't been playing collectively good football this year), his ankle should be able to heal up to a point where he can be close to making the plays he used to.

Win or lose, it was the right decision, and I'm glad it was made.

Now Im neutral on this issue, but I can tell you that if we would have lost I for sure would have been furious that we didn't put Taylor in.

Then again I don't know the extent of his injury.

i agree enhance.

this game is frustrating because everyone will criticize green, but the whole team played poorly. really, he was the least of our problems. we gave up some easy points, and that is inexcusable. some play calling was curious. turnovers hurt. and just generally playing flat hurt.

The play calling is something I was inquisitive about as well.

I don't usually knock the plays that are called, generally because I know that when they work everybody loves em and when they don't, everybody gets upset.

With that said, blocking is about having enough guys to block the defenders coming at you. We ran the hand-off to Helu where the center and guard pull to the strong side of the field around 6-8 times today, and ran it a lot in the fourth quarter. It was quite obvious that ISU was expecting it as they had loaded up the defense on that side of the field with a couple of extra defenders.

Today was just about not executing, but you gotta wonder why a play with such defining characteristics was still being run and run often, when it really wasn't netting us a lot of positive yardage.

I still thought most of the play-calling was good though, just not a lot of good execution.

I agree with everything you said. In regards to Cody's play, I think one thing he needs to work on is slowing down and making sure the blitzes are being picked up, as well as feeling pressure and stepping up in the pocket accordingly.

EDIT Regarding your play calling comments: I know this is all in hindsight and pretty useless, but I was wondering how a shovel pass would have worked on that last conversion attempt after Iowa State had shown a tendency to blitz on third down.

I also wonder how Cody's noggin was after someone nailed him in the head at full speed with the crown of their helmet. It's rough having all three of your qb's banged up.

I'd have been furious if we'd have put Martinez in to salvage the ISU game and have him hobbled the rest of the season because we put him in when he wasn't ready.

On the play calling, was part of the problem Green not having the experience, or maybe the permission, to check out of plays that were doomed to failure?

i think it goes with the nessisary game plan on the coaches part... it tells the team hey lets not get too crazy and play safe... so the team isn't soo pumped or excited goes out there and doesnt play with fire.. if your game plan is basiclly play it safe and not to lose....that hows your team preforms... safe in some instances lazy and disjoined.....

I'm not an expert and I thought the 3rd down play calling was horrendous. I wasn't keeping track but it seemed like almost all of our 3rd down failures were passing. 3rd&2???

i agree with everything you said. lack of execution. the defense gave up a lot of yards. that is the most depressing outcome of this game.

Some of them were, yes.

But we also had three straight third down conversions on our last touchdown drive in regulation. Of those three conversions, all three were passes from Green including a pretty nice one that set us up first and goal.

I don't think Cody did too bad when you consider it's his first start of the year in tough wind conditions against an awfully fired up and well coached team. I'm pretty adamant that this was a team failure today.

it was the game plan i think that caused us to play so flat... we played to not lose rather to win and that mentality affects our team....we want to go out and tear people apart not sit back and chill.......

While I agree it wasn't on green or any one player...I do believe a healthy Taylor wins that game for us by a couple scores

I don't think there is really any debating that. Martinez has shown he's the best option we have at quarterback this year. My point is that keeping him out with his injury and giving Green the start was the best choice.
