 Just tempering some enthusiasm!
I think it's important to not get too caught up in hype and things like that, and instead realize there's a lot of uncertainty about how the team will do the next few years, in spite of some promise. The hype destroyed people's views of Cody Green and Marlon Lucky, and I'm just worried it could also destroy people's perception of Bo Pelini. Right now people think this staff is walking on water, and that we are on the up and up and headed for MNC contention. Same thing we all thought before '07. I think next year we will be fortunate to maintain the success we have had this year and last, just because it's going to take a lot of work to do so. Not to mention, our monster '11 schedule.
Also we should keep in mind, Enunwa and SJB were Curenski Gilleylen and Chris Brooks not too long ago. It didn't take long for people to start jumping on Cure for having bad hands when it's not even the case, but he definitely hasn't produced/had much chances lately. And for every stud we identify early (like Helu), there are a bunch whose star falls for one reason or another (Anthony Blue, Jaivorio Burkes, even Zac Lee, who was supposed to be seriously pushing for the job in 2008), and others that just take a few years to get going (Hagg, Prince).
Don't paint us all with that brush. I thought it was fairly obvious where we were headed during and after the 04' Texas Tech game. There were a lot of posters back then that felt the same way. Unfortunately, they don't post here anymore and haven't for a few years.
Not trying to paint anyone with a brush here. I thought it was fairly obvious we were going to start contending for championships back in '07, so I'm one of those guys that got too excited. Just saying that even with good names on the roster and promise, a variety of things could happen. If we follow this season up with 4-5 seasons of 8-10 wins, I think people right now would consider that a failure and start calling for Bo's head, which I think is unreasonable...
Of course, I don't suspect we will be headed for a 5-7 collapse either. But that 2011 team could very well win 7 games (or 11). Patience for the staff and the players, in either case.
We gotta be careful about saying how loaded we are gonna be next year. Despite the talent we have coming back next year, think of all the talent we are LOSING. On offense we lose Paul despite his case of "stonehands" he is one of our home run threats, along with Helu who is our best playmaker out their besides Martinez. Quincy E and Jean Bapiste have great upside but Quincy is only one that has seen the field, which was pretty rarely so far. IMO on offense next year I think Martinez and Reed are gonna be our biggest playmakers.
On defense, Prince, Hagg, Gomes, Allen, are all gone after this year. Those guys absolute ballers out their. I dont think we have the depth or experience yet to just come in and replace those guys without missing a stride. Guys like Cooper havent even seen the field and we as fans expect him to just come in and light it up next year???
Pelini is awesome at DEVELOPING talent, we need to patience.
Remember we go to the BIGTEN next year, we will have toughest schedule in america, reasonably we cant expect more than 9 or 10 win season.
Oh did I mention, we lose our kicker/punter and kickoff specialist.
