Deja Vu

It seems like most just are more interested in pointing a finger instead of being concerned with the causes of poor production. And frankly those causes should be concerning.

- We have been moving, fast, in the direction of 'the offense Bo wants' since 2008. Is that the right call? Did we have the personnel and depth to go in that direction full throttle, particularly this year? Was it the right call to hitch the entire wagon to rely on one player's big-play running potential?

- Do we have the right staff, across the board, on offense? Are they a cohesive functioning unit?

- Bo leads the defense. Who leads the offense? It is on Shawn Watson, obviously, but with as much input as Bo is having in the offensive operation, can ANY OC function with their offense and offensive staff the same way that Bo has installed 'his' defense into this program? Should Bo give the OC a lot more autonomy, or take the reigns across the board as a HC, as he has been doing?

- Why are we lacking in offensive talent? Recruiting? Positional coaching? Bad luck? A mix?

- Does an extremely conservative approach on offense whenever injuries hit or the going gets tough, help or hurt this team?

- The Taylor decision in the CCG, did that help us or hurt us?

- Why do we have so many injuries, especially it seems, on the offensive side of the ball?

You can call these excuses all you want, but they are reasons that we can discuss. If would be incredibly blind to answer all of these with 'Watson sucks, he has to go.'

My 2 cents - I'm fine with the conservative approach, eschewing stats in favor of keeping us in tight games that we can win. I think Bo should be a HC that has handles on both the defense and the offense, rather than being a DC with the HC title. But he has to do a better job of directing the offense than he has so far. Goes back to both the recruiting of quarterbacks, the direction of the offense, and most specifically the call to stick with an injured Taylor, and being so reluctant to unwrap Green and send him out there with confidence. I think the TM experiment has worked out pretty well on the field, with the biggest problem being how much the offense had to change without him in there.

We were really on pace for some incredible offensive numbers before Taylor and Zac both got knocked out in the same week. You can call that excuses, or you can call that the reality for many teams that have to run with QB3.
This could be the best post that I have read on this topic.
Agreed. Great post, zoogies.
   my eyes must be deceiving me...

Zoogies, great post! I think if Taylor doesn't get hurt or Zac doesn't get hurt, we're not having this discussion right now. We would've won 2 of the 3 we lost with a healthy Taylor. You can't say we would've beat Texass, he was healthy in that game along with Zac so that's just a loss plain and simple. You CAN argue the point that we lost to aTm and OU by a very close margin and with a healthy Taylor we don't lose those games and are in the Fiesta Bowl with a Big XII Championship in our trophy collection. I hope like hell all the rumors with Taylor are false. With a healthy Taylor and our defense I love our chances against any team on any gameday. Just think how much Taylor will improve next year and the year after. I think we'll miss Helu next season, but Burkhead has shown he is more than capable of doing what he has to for the team.

All valid questions. I think in about the time it takes t-mart to go from 1st to high gear we could come up with just as many that could be answered with "watson sucks, he has to go" though :)

Personally, I don't really care what happens with the offense. If Bo cleans house, I'll be happy. If he cans Watson and hires some junior high coach to lead the offense, I'll be happy. Even if he just makes major changes to the structure of the current staff I'll be fairly happy. I'll trust Bo to make the right decision when it comes to the change. The only thing that will REALLY bother me, is if he maintains status quo. If he does nothing, I can tell you exactly where we'll be next year. The only thing consistent about this offense (I won't even call it Watson's because who knows who's it is) is their inability to perform when called upon. Put that on Bo, put it on Watson, put it on the position coaches...I don't care. Just put it on someone or something, and make a change. Make some attempt to fix the weak link in an otherwise solid chain. Just don't sit back and "trust the process" anymore.

Honestly, a huge part of me would like to see us beat Washington 6-3. I'm not sure what it will take to force Bo's hand...but it doesn't seem like enough has happened thus far, and frankly I don't want to see another season go by with similar results. Maybe we take a step back and Zoogies is throwing out the "I told you so's" left and right...but sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take a few forward. This could have been done last season. It can be done this season. Don't want unti next season when we're in the SAME position to finally do something.

Watson does what Bo tells him to do. So whatever finger you point at him you can point right at Bo.
:yeah

I have sensed a little friction between Bo and Watson over which QB should even be in the game. I think we saw this last year also when Cody got a couple of starts. It's pretty difficult to blame anyone other than the head coach who has all say over all assistants. All I know is that Bama won a NC last year with an offense that ranked in the mid-40's. Our offense ranked higher than this. If people want to blame Watson for our fumbling problems and inability to catch the ball, by all means continue. However, I'm not convinced this is his responsibility. If people want to blame Watson for our OL lining up incorrectly, false starting, etc.; by all means continue. Again, I'm not convinced this is his responsibility. We lead the country in fumbles. We lead the Big 12 in penalties, and we have done so ever since this staff has been here. Does all this fall on Watson's shoulders?

I'm not a Watson lover or hater. However, I just don't understand how we can throw him under the bus for the Texas loss. He called a great game but our receivers didn't finish.

Alabama was consistent, we aren't. Alabama played 7-9 games against top 30 defenses, we didn't. I'd gladly give up a few of the points/yards we took from Idaho, K. State, Washington, W. Kentucky, Colorado, etc whigh gave us this 35th ranked offense for just 20 yards and 3 points against OU. Just doesn't work that way. Watson can exploit 90+ ranked defenses, no one will argue with you there. Fortunately for him in the Big12 we get to play 6-8 of them a year. The Big10? Not so much.

Your honor I bring into evidence South Dakota State and Texas.

I, too, am tired of the excuses, it is time for SOMETHING to change. Seeing his past performances, I have come to the conclusion that Watson is not the OC to get us to the next level.

NO! Don't bring the Texas debacle into this again. We had the right plays and good passes from our QBs to get TDs and most importantly the win that day. The Texas curse just happened to turn our hands into oil-covered bricks that day.

The problem with a message board is that it makes discussions too black-and-white. I'm no proponent of Watson's, but I'm not ready to call for his ouster yet, either (I think I did in a thread many weeks ago, but I retract that. And I'd been drinking).

The reality is that there are issues on offense that we can lay at Watson's feet. But there are also issues that are not his fault, and circumstances beyond his control. zoogies did a good job of summarizing a lot of this. Gotta give props when they're due.

And kchusker_chris knocks it out of the park.

Do something. FIX IT. I don't care how . . . but the status quo will not get it done. Ultimately, it's on Bo.

To the original question: I don't think it's going to be a repeat of last year's performance. The last two years we saw a steady improvement over the year and they were very similar in many ways. This year just seems different. Something is off, and I don't expect an amazing performance again, but I still think we'll win.

The Oklahoma game was the game that got under my skin from an offensive point of view. Dialing up passes when the run and wildcat were obviously working. If Wats could have dialed up just a couple run plays instead of those passes we win. Turnovers defiantly cost us, but some a lot of the plays especially in 2nd half definatly frustrated me. I'm looking forward to see how he uses the offensive playbook against UW. This should defiantly be a ground and pound game where the passes will eventually open up.

That's fair. But, I think if there's any part of the team that really wants to make a statement, it will be the offense. No doubt the Huskies will be better prepared for us this time around, but if we're healthy (Martinez) and execute like we should, methinks we'll see some fireworks.
