International Man of Mystery
Nebraska joining the Big Ten will feel like coming home again to many fans - more than any other conference, the Big Ten resembles Nebraska's old stomping ground in the Big 8. However, there is one major difference between Nebraska's culture and that of much of the Big Ten - namely, our post-season focus.
This time every year, Nebraska fans assess our chances of making another run for a national title. To us, it seems like winning the conference/conference championship game is just a step on the journey to the ultimate goal: playing for the championship. Our goals can be ranked like this:
1. National Championship
2. Conference Championship
3. Nine Wins (minimum)
From what I'm learning of the various Big Ten schools (and I haven't talked to fans of all of them yet), their goals seem to look more like this:
1. Rose Bowl
2. National Championship
3. Beat their rival
I have yet to discuss this with Penn State fans, but so far this seems to be the major focus of Michigan, Ohio State, Wiscy, Iowa, etc. This seems backward to me - who cares about the bowl game? The bowl game is a means to an end, and that end is winning the title. Absent that, you want to win your conference. Absent that, you want to win as many games as possible (nine being a traditional Nebraska benchmark).
Do you see yourself adopting the Big Ten's traditional focus on the Rose Bowl? Will you still want the title first? Do you think the addition of a large fan base like Nebraska's, where the traditional focus every season was national titles, will change the focus of other Big Ten schools?
