The first time anyone proclaimed us "national champions" was in 1970, and again in 1971, both widely regarded as "legitimate" national championships.corncraze said:I agree entirely. Them claiming they have 2 is a stretch, let alone 11!knapplc said:It's because they have very little integrity. They claim nine national championships prior to 1936. 1936 was a magical year because that was the first year of the Associated Press Poll. Prior to this, any publication, body, sportswriter, pundit or Wizard of Oz could bestow a national championship on a team. Most of those championships come with a bit of controversy, since multiple bodies handed out multiple championships to multiple teams, often with very little reason or consideration for... much of anything.
That's why Nebraska doesn't claim the "national championships" they won from 1980-1984. Why? Integrity.
I do wonder though, did anyone proclaim us as "national championships" back from the late 1800 and early 1900s? I never thought we did, but I really don't pay much attention to the history of what was quote on quote called "football" for that time.

I think the rule is, if you were Alabama or Michigan and went undefeated or only lost one back then that equates to a national title. Or it could just be if some random late 19th or early 20th century writer said something nice about you. It's hard to figure out.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football_national_championships_in_NCAA_Division_I_FBScorncraze said:I agree entirely. I hope this helps Corncraze.
The vote tally just jumped enormously since I checked it a few hours ago. Either ESPN updates the total intermittently, or there's a Husker hacker out there somewhere with a botnet that's gaming the vote.hm we have a decent lead on mich
