LJS: Path to Pelini book, anyone read it?

You have a couple of facts wrong but the main thing I'll take exception with is the fact that Bo is too controlling of access to the program. He was very open about letting former players, boosters, etc watch what was going on in practice until they became disrespectful to the program and started leaking out information such as injuries (which is against HIPPA anyway) and offensive and defensive strategies. Someone would throw 5 bad passes in practice and the internet blew up. It had to be shut down some because people (while well meaning)don't understand all the consequences of sharing all the information they want to share to feel a part of the program. People who are at practice everyday as spectators are there because they stay quiet. You won't see them running to a message board to report and injury. They are tight lipped and usually only talk about it with permission from the coaches or well enough after the fact they're not going to end up in and unfavorable situation with the program.

Things have also changed over the last 15 years. When TO was there he only had to worry about the newspapers and that was pretty much it. They reported the agenda that TO wanted and now its slant the reporting to the agenda of what dirt will sell papers, get hits on the web etc. Neither way is right but we need to realize they are different now. And TO was actually as controlling if not more when it came to letting information out. Reporters knew exactly what they could and couldn't print and if they printed things they weren't supposed to they didn't get to go to practice. Go back and read the reports. You may see that Joe Blow had 60 yards rushing in practice but you'd never know if they were running two tight end sets, out of the shot gun, etc. I was fluff that was pretty non descriptive. Quite the opposite from today where people sell insiders stuff and customer expect details.

TO was also very particular, very detailed and controlling. Not much happened that he didn't know about or get a report about. This included non X and O related things. In fact he had to have the labels on his water bottles in the fridge all face the exact same way and have them lined up perfectly. I also dealt with TO on a public appearance that was a multiple day affair. We were presented with a list almost to the minute of where he wanted to be, what he wanted done, etc. To compare it to Bo. . .I'd say Bo is more laid back in that area. To be fair, probably the only person that was pretty open with the program and the everyday going on was Bob D and that was a completely different time.

This isn't a troll in the least. The book is an interesting read, because the tone and rhetoric used to usher in the Bo Pelini era was of course wrought with hyperbole, and at the same time it took senseless and useless potshots at Callahan, almost everywhere it could.

Callahan didn't piss on traditions. The reality is that this program was in some really bad shape when he showed up. The walk-on program was unmanageable, and the numbers were reduced down to a level that he was comfortable coaching. It was one of the pillars used to hang him, since he didn't have enough walk-ons. One should note that Bo is still carrying the same number of walk-ons as we did during the Callahan years, and current plans do not have that number increasing significantly going forward.

The other point that really hit home is that Nebraskan's were getting their program back. In what way? Bo has tightened the reigns on his program to the point where he boots the media out of his practices. In addition, he creates a Fan Day that is one giant middle finger to Husker Fans everywhere, his coaches show is clearly a burden he would rather not participate in, he literally phones in his Signing Day Press Conference, and the list goes on. This isn't Bo Pelini's Program, and it never will be. This program belongs to the fans, and they are the reason that he has a job, he is the pilot/captain of this ship, ergo, he gets to make important decisions, but holding the program hostage shouldn't be tolerated. Sooner or later, continually rebuking the very people who give you a job is going to come full circle and hurt him. That is really the biggest disappointment I have in Pelini. If he would let all that ancillary stuff just go and focus on coaching, the future of this program wouldn't be as uncertain as it is today.
Look, not many people here are going to agree with you about Callahan. He hung himself.

You're just about 4 years late to that debate.

As far as your Pelini assessment, fans "getting their program back" doesn't mean everyone can walk in, get an all access pass to practice, maybe stop by the coaches offices for a quick chat, and go hang out with the players. It's the sense that those in the program are working hard, can play with anyone, and can win.

I don't think most people here take his dislike for stupid questions in pressers, the boring nature of coaching shows (did you watch Osborne's, like ever?), or the fact that he thinks signing day is one horrible spectacle as personally as you seem to have. The program's future is definitely not uncertain in just about anyone's mind but yours.

You are trolling, whether you know it or not, as I said this has been debated at length years ago... Not our fault you are 4 years late to this party.

Callahan did hang himself. I couldn't stand the guy at all. I find the comparison between him and Pelini jam packed with tons of incongruities.

Callahan was taken to task because of traditions he thumbed his nose at. Pelini has done much of the same and it is nearly applauded and welcomed with open arms.

There is no trolling involved here. 4 years ago, the rhetoric was this guy gets the "Nebraska Way" and he is raw as a coach, but he is the perfect man for the job, etc etc. Same stuff that happens with every coaching search. Dealing in a world of facts, that rhetoric is simply a bunch of hot air to appease folks en masse, and to sell the Pelini hire.

Things like Signing Day aren't taken personally. The actions taken follow the pattern of behavior. It is a huge day to sell your program for the future across the country. It is a proud moment. Yeah, folks hate on Nick Saban, but the dude got some pretty looking gals to "deliver the faxes" and that got on ESPN. What were we doing? Our coach couldn't be bothered with any questions, instead it was a conference call so he could wax poetic for a few minutes.

Like it or not, this program is facing uncertainty at the coaching position. 2011 is a make or break year.
I'll also call BS on that. If there is an opening it will be because Bo wants to leave for a job he feels would be better. For all the crap the media tries to sling the board of regents, boosters, and the administration have pretty much given Bo what ever he's asked to be successful and they are very dedicated to keeping him here. Any issues that came up last year have been resolved and the one guy who cause the biggest issue has gone out of his way to make things right.

I can't tell if you're really being serious or just intentionally instigative.

Either way, you seem to fit the very definition of someone who feels unjustifiably entitled to whatever you want. Why does the NU football program belong to you, specifically, as a fan? Why do coaches owe you...anything?

Flat out, I want Nebraska to win. As long as we aren't cheating SEC style to get those wins, I couldn't care any less about the demeanor of the head coach. And since I have no frame of reference on the challenges and irritations of being the HC of a major CFB program, I will reserve judgment on his dismissive attitude towards things like National Signing Day, especially if we keep getting better and better each year under Pelini. And guess what? We have.

Based on that, and the fact that NU has reached a point over the last three years to where we are now the favorites of many to win our division and our conference, I'm going to dismiss your attempts at riling us up as irrelevant and strangely emotionally acidic.

Make or break year? We've been to a conference championship game two years running and you're talking about the guy phoning in on signing day?

it kind of sounds like endoquon is one of those spurned media guys, like dirk chatelain, whos pissed cuz he doesnt get all of the stories,he wants. Oh well

if Pelini was so controlling his guys wouldn't be tweeting their twats off, or be within a 50 clicks of facebook.com. instead you've got every one of them on there - half of which are underage getting tagged w/ beer at parties, or leaking juicy inside details like "Martinez helped me in practice today" that instantly validates Martinez's rise to a 4 star general. We all knew Turner had switched to WR days before the medio reported. It's a ticking time-bomb yet Pelini isn't controlling enough to find issue w/ it.

I thought Bo had made it publicly clear he isn't fond of things like Twitter. This might have been some time ago though.

Anyway, control isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a balancing act, as anything, and a very subjective matter. Turner Gill for instance, probably went overboard with his rules at KU...

No doubt.

What was the rule? No women after 10:00pm or something?

Worst....recruiting pitch......EVER.
