Lost Letterman: Irving Fryar

Jim Weber LostLettermen.com

Lost Lettermen: This is Jim Weber of LostLettermen.com and I’m joined by Nebraska’s Irving Fryar, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1984 NFL Draft. Thanks so much for joining us. My first question is a lot of people know that you became very spiritual and religious during your playing days.

Could you talk about how you started your new church, the New Jerusalem House of God?

Irving Fryar: (laughs) I started it … couldn’t have done it without the help of God and without the instruction and the command to do so. Never would’ve thought in my commitment to Christ I’d be directed by God to start a church but when I got the call, when I got the word and God spoke to my heart about starting a church, I knew nothing about being a pastor or directing people or all of the intricacies that comes with a ministry that needs to be in place in order for that ministry to function properly.

But when God calls you to do (something), He will bring you what you need to get it done, or He’ll bring people into your life that have the skills and the tools to help you accomplish it.

It’s been a very interesting journey; it’s been a gratifying and satisfying journey. A journey that is no where near complete but one that we continue to learn in and grow in. And we continue to see the fruits of our labor just from being obedient to God.

We need to get us some New Jersey guys on the team again. Like the Fry Man.

Weird....I just located him on facebook a few days ago....don't know if this sucks or not, but I did not see any mention of UNL or anything in his bio. Does he not get along with anyone here anymore?

That is weird. I don't remember hearing about any sort of dispute or anything. And I guess it has been around 25 years since he left UNL.

He probably figures everyone knows and he just doesn't want to make a big deal about it.
That, and it's a pretty small percentage of us who think of him as an ex-NU guy first. Most remember Fryar as an ex-NFL guy. For his 15 years in the NFL.
