One is a modest, unassuming redshirt junior. The other is an outgoing, slick-haired true freshman.
Between them, Brett Maher and Mauro Bondi have a combined zero games of experience kicking for Nebraska. Together, they face the difficult task of replacing Alex Henery and Adi Kunalic.
"Off the field, they're a little bit different," special teams coach John Papuchis said. "But on the field, they're both competitors."
Right now, Maher and Bondi are battling for three jobs. The competitions for place-kicker, punter and kickoff specialist won't end for at least another week. So far, the contest is neck-and-neck.
"Even if it wasn't, I want to keep it a secret for a while," Papuchis said. "They're both doing pretty well. There's no need to rush a decision at this point."
