Future trivia question #2: Who was the first Husker fan in the gate at the first ever sporting event for the Huskers as a member of the Big Ten? A: knapplc :thumbs
So, now that I'll live in Husker history forever, we can move on to the important business of the evening...
We got to the soccer field at 4:30, and since doors opened at 4:30, we went right in. Of course, being there 90 minutes before the game started and being the only ones there, there wasn't much to do... so we went over to the football practice and sat around watching the guys finish their last two-a-day practice. I had a lot of fun telling my kid who the players were, what they were doing, and what they were supposed to be doing. Since we didn't have passes the Yellow Jackets eventually escorted us out, but they let us stay a long time before shooing us away, which was very cool.
That means I got to watch both this morning's and this evening's practice, mostly because they are really cool about not getting all gate-gestapo on a guy. Fun times.
Of course I won't get into specifics of what I saw, but everything looked well-run, Bo being Bo out there and Ron Brown being awesome. Saw some guys receive some punts, and was impressed with the hang time on the punts - but I couldn't see who was booming them on the other side of the field.
So, anyway, back to why I titled this thread the way I did, at halftime of the soccer game I stood up to stretch my legs, turned around, and there was this giant knot of girls milling around something. I wandered over to see what it was and guess who I see in the eye of this hurricane of young girls - Taylor Martinez.
I saw RKIII a little ways away, kind of hanging around, and then right next to me I noticed Brion Carnes, so I asked him what Hurricane Martinez was all about, and he tells me, "He's the quarterback." We chatted for a bit, and unsurprisingly I liked Mr. Carnes quite a bit. I know I tend to like all our players, but really - Carnes is nice and charming and easygoing. At one point I asked him who that immense dude was standing near the crowd around Taylor and he tells me it's Andrew Rodriguez. All I can say is, ARod is a large person. He makes Marcel Jones look normal-sized, and Marcel makes me look like a flea - and I'm a big guy. If ARod can move like they say he can, he's going to be a legend.
After a bit the girls had their fill and let Taylor go, that or RKIII just took charge and started clearing them out. Kellogg comes through like the Town Crier saying "Here comes Taylor Martinez!" and they walk over our way, so I ask Martinez, "What's the deal? Why were there just girls getting your autograph over there?" and he gives me this cat-that-ate-the-canary grin. Good sense of humor on Mr. Martinez, there.
The guys were leaving, so I shook Mr. Carnes' hand, we exchanged "Nice ta meetchas" and off they went.
So, much later in the match I realize that one of the girls who was hovering around Taylor is sitting right in front of me, so I asked her what the big deal was about Martinez. She replies, "He's gorgeous!" like I'm some kind of idiot for not seeing this. I about rolled off my seat laughing. Apparently Taylor is a teen heartthrob. Who knew?
Fun evening. Tough loss. But great to meet Carnes, and flip Taylor some grief over those girls.
EDIT - I originally wrote ALEX Rodriguez instead of Andrew Rodriguez because I'm a bonehead.
