Great analysis in post one especially, Macro. That's exactly how I feel about this game. High ceiling, Martinez got better, too early to diagnose the O Line, etc etc etc.

actually, due to Tropical Storm Lee we did lose some of the game so your insult might be somewhat justified. Every time the tv came back on, Martinez was throwing a wounded duck, so my maybe I didn't see all the billiance. Yes, he did show sign of improvement-he took a sack instead of forcing it and he did looking a little more confident. And the rest of the offense looked out-of-synch too, so it's not all his problem-plenty to go around. Outside of just hitting a hole and making a foot race to the endzone, which will not happen too often again better teams, he has to be taught everything. I am sure we all agree, 250 balanced offensive yards should be considered a great day by your starting QB. Whether you like it not, TMart will not be our QB at the Iowa game. I think he will be hurt by then.

And yes, I do think Burkhead might develop into a better QB then TM. Of course, he's a Junior and its not feasable at this stage. Stating again- potential, not polish. And I think you agree with me, Tmart is our QB because there is no one else.

Being totally honest, I'm a little disappointed that Bo said Martinez is "lightyears" ahead of where he was last year. His accuracy looked the same at best. The biggest improvement I saw out of him was throwing that ball away in the second quarter(?). I AM NOT saying I don't think he'll improve, I was just expecting a little more is all.

He'll bounce back.

Martinez got better as the game went on. He began to look more comfortable standing in the pocket. Made good decisions for the most part, much improved in that regard from the end of last year. Had a good 3rd quarter. Didn't throw an INT. Made some good pre-snap reads. Made some good reads on option plays, several of which went for touchdowns. Made a great read to pitch to Burkhead which almost went to the house from 50+. He was *by far* our most productive player on the day. Completed 50% of his passes despite several drops.

He did some good things. I agree with your comment about his passing mechanics, he needs to improve there, but you can't just stack the deck.

Don't tell Martinez that, his post-game quote was "Hopefully the receivers will continue working on catching the ball to make me look better." Wow, if that ain't cocky i don't know what is.

Martinez clearly doesnt think there is anything wrong with his passing and Beck admitted to something stupid. As an offensive coordinator i would think you run the same play over and over until the defense stops it, not until it works.

Martinez was complimenting the receivers for their play when he answered the question. You completely misquoted him too, he actually said, "All the receivers are doing a great job right now, and hopefully they keep it up, keep on catching balls and keep on trying to make me look good." He was asked about the receivers, and he heaped praise on them, and you think that's cocky? Stop trolling.

You also misquoted Beck: he didn't say, "I ran the same play over and over until it worked." He said, "I did some dumb things through the course of the game, pounding my head against the wall, saying, 'We're going to work on a certain play.' I just kept running it. It probably wasn't very smart on my part, but I'm stubborn sometimes." It had nothing to do with his philosophy in how to score points or win games, it has to do with his philosophy of teaching. We had a 30 point lead and one of the best defenses in the country, so he wanted to get his players to actually execute the play that he called, even if it took several reps. It was practice.

Sorry for thinking that we had a game against UTC and not a practice.

1. You got called on a misquote, just accept it.

2. It's UTC, we were in no danger, I don't have a problem with Beck being in "let's work on this, let's execute better" mode rather than doing his utmost to run it up on a lesser opponent. We had the opportunity to get better and we took it. This O needs all the work it can get before hitting the meat of the sched.

What did we learn???

We learned that there are fans who will never, ever be satisfied, no matter what.

It was the first game of the season with a new offense, new OC, new WR coach, new LB coach, new secondary coach, new assistant coach(es) on the O Line, and things were ragged.

Despite this, apparently there are a LOT of people who expected this game to go tremendously smoothly, and who are overwrought that it didn't.

It was a first game. There are things to work on. There were problems. The fact that this is the case is not the end of the world, or the end of any title run, or any indication of anything, other than that it was our first game.

Apparently a 33-point win just isn't what it used to be.

Some have learned this 20 years ago. Some just learned this...yesterday?

I learned our D-Line could be something special. I re-learned that young offensive lines in college can have ...issues. I knew this, but was drunk on Kool-Aid and apparantly forgot, because I kept hearing about "the depth of the O-Line... blah blah blah." Freshman offensive linemen are still freshmen offensive linemen, regardless of perceived potential by whomever. Sophmores are still young, too. Not much to be done except witness some growing pains this year, while the staff accellerates the learning and strength curves to the best of their ability. :bigredn:

To be clear, I do not think that Martinez looks like he's going to lose his job this year. But the game he had yesterday was much poorer than you make it sound.

There are some positives, in my opinion. He looks more comfortable as a leader of the troops out in the huddle, and as far as the small leeway he is being given in making adjustments at the line - could be a promising development? It is very hard to tell, though, just yet.

As far as running, we broke several runs but were, aside from that, shut down by a FCS line in embarrassing fashion. The long runs were cool, but the stuffs he suffered were worrisome. Not hugely worrisome, but just not real positive either. 11/22 passing against a FCS team is fairly awful. Receiver have drops all the time, and it wasn't an extraordinarily bad case of it yesterday the way you could say Texas last year was. If we are comparing his completion percentage to a standard, it would have to be the standard of every other QB's completion percentage with all their drops taken out.

Point is, Taylor had some bad-looking passes and some good-looking passes. He locked onto his guys very noticeably and that was why some of his passes were blocked or defended against. He just didn't look too good through the air today, aside from three or four throws he made (completions to Cotton and Reed stand out IMO). Not to worry, we can hope Taylor will improve.

i guess i thought something as simple as looking off your receivers would have been accomplished in the pre season...guess not.
