Why so much pessimism?

It was good to get the season started with what we all expected, a win. Some of the same problems as last year, still seem to be the same, 0-line and wide receivers. I have to agree that we should have been able to push their d-line around a lot better than we did, even if it was treated as a scrimmage game. Not sold at all on the receiving core. Looks like the TE's will really have to be involved a lot more, if Martinez is going to get through this season, without being beat up to much. Don't know if we can run the ball that well, unless Taylor is the one doing it, and that's the scary part. We have no one even close to handling the qb spot if he gos down. Carnes looks light years away from being ready and who is backing him up ??? If T-mart has to carry this team, it may turn out to be a long, long season if he gets hurt. Didn't think I would miss Cody, thou hated to see him leave. Hard to believe that Carnes was ahead of him on the depth chart.

Still looks like the making of a good team, and plenty of time to work the bugs out, before B1G play starts. BCS/NC game may not be in the cards this year, but I would like to see the Huskers win a Rose Bowl. Believe we are 0-3 in them.

The O-line seemed to be a major weakness. Question: Can our O-line person be fired during the season or do we have to suffer with this person's coaching for the entire season knowing it's not going to get better? Why was this person retained?

Or could it be that we simply don't have strong enough/athletic enough/tough enough players on the O-Line?

One of my major 'gripes' about yesterday's game was all the holding the other team did and the refs didn't call it. I didn't think the officiating was very good yesterday. Martinez was whacked a couple of times after he had scored and the refs turned a blind eye, yet when one of our boys, who couldn't stop their momentum, was called 15 yards for tackling out of bounds? Blah! I hate that kind of crap.

 
Supposedly, the run by Legate was the first run by a Husker fullback since 2004.

And it might be last one until 2017, if trends continue. It seems like that play was just a nod at the fans and our history. The way an option play during the Callahan years was.

Maybe it's something we will start to see more often. Really don't know though.

I wouldn't mind seeing Legate and Zimmerer getting a carry or two a game. If they get it to work once or twice then do it.

 
That was actually one of the problems with the option in Saturday's game. You have to mix in those fullback carries to punish a defense for over-pursuing and to keep them honest.

 
Of course the win is good, but I want to see to more td's then field goals, especially against an FCS. This game is a push as far as that goes.

If we continue to run the option out of the I formation, then we'll see the fullback get some carries. When teams start cheating towards the perimeter to stop the QB and the pitchman, that's when you hit them up the gut with the fullback. If you time the playcall as well as Osborne used to, it's a lethal play.

 
Can we stop with the Oregon talk and comparing our offense to theirs? Their offense is extremely overrated. Every good D they've faced the last 2 years has shut them down. They average 45+ PPG against crappy PAC-10/12/16 defenses, but in their games against good defenses (Boise, tOSU, Auburn, LSU) they've barely averaged 17 ppg. There is a reason for that.

Man, what's with the hate on Oregon? Their offense is no different from any offense in that it will have a harder time against good defenses. You should also note that two of those examples you mentioned (Boise State and LSU) were the first games of the season. Imagine if Nebraska tried to run its offense last Saturday against LSU instead of Chattanooga. Think we would have managed 27 points?

Oregon's a good football team. There's a reason that they came closer to winning a national championship than any non-SEC team in the last 5 years.

Oregon didn't install a new offense during the offseason. They've been in the same system for 5 years. Slight difference.

Oregon didn't install a new offense during the offseason. They've been in the same system for 5 years. Slight difference.

OK, but they did have to replace some offensive linemen and some WRs, and if you think that didn't make a big difference in the game the other night, look at all the drops their WRs had. They also had a true freshman with two costly fumbles that LSU recovered, and a fumble on a punt return inside their own 5 gave LSU a free TD.

Anyways, like I said, Oregon is a good football team. People compare Nebraska's offense to theirs because there are similar concepts and philosophies, and because Oregon has been unquestionably the strongest offensive football team in college football over the past 5 years. Call them overrated all you want, but nobody has had more consistently strong offensive production in that timeframe than Oregon.
