Week 5 "Expert" Picks: Nebraska @ Wisconsin

Brett McMurphy was the only guy out of the seven writers at cbssports.com who has NU picked to win. He was also the only analyst to correctly pick Pitt over South Florida last night. LINK

Lol @ Watson... True. Now get the hell out of her... go back to Kentucky.

DO NOT LIKE SI's prediction or anyone else who cites Taylor's lack of big passing yardage games as a marker of his ability to pass. There's a reason he doesn't pile up the yardage... That is not what our offense is predicated on. If we needed Taylor to go all Mike Leach Air Tard offense on people, we would have him do it or get someone in there that could. He runs within the confines of our offense and it works. So Taylor has operated our run first offense well for the ~1 year he's been healthy. When he was unhealthy, he couldn't do anything well, so don't use that as proof.

Exactly.

You and a handful of other posters here grasp that. Because most posters here are so young they just can't get a handle on anything but a Clownahan or Callawatts offense with it's priorities. That's why they wine, sob and cry until the Missouri river overflows every single day because they feel the priorities are all wrong.

Even averaging over 40 pts a game this year so far.......even with Tmart's record when healthy now at 12 - 1 (forget our wrs dropping his passes all game long vs Texas last year, of course it was still Tmart's fault)......even currently with 13th in the nation in scoring offense (with a decent sos). I don't think they'll get it for a long time.....sigh.

Oh well, the upside is this offense is getting more dangerous every week. The cheeseheads better tighten their chin straps.

GBR!!

yep

Too many people are placing way too much emphasis on Wisconsin's schedule. They played weak teams. They rolled over weak teams. What does that tell you? That tells me they rolled over weak teams. That's what good teams do. They look strong, consistent and fundamentally sound on offense and defense.

On the other hand, even allowing for some built in favorable bias toward the Huskers, I am concerned about the consistency, on offense and defense. They can look outstanding on one drive and horrible on the next two. Tackling is my personal defensive barometer since it should be the one thing which should not be subject to variance and this team worries me on that front. On offense, nothing is more frustrating than watching T-Mart miss wide open receivers. T-Mart hitting open guys and tackling will be the keys to the game. These are just a couple thoughts that create cause for concern Saturday.

Nebraska has the speed, strength and the talent to roll over Wisconsin, the question is whether or not we will see them at close to full potential. I hope so.

As many have already eluded to, I think this game is going to rest of Taylor's ability to throw the ball. It's going to be very difficult to run successfully against Wisconsin if they stack eight or more in the box.

I think most of the picks seem reasonable...well except for the one where Nebraska scores more than Wisconsin and still loses the game. Assuming our offense can keep up, I expect this to be a fairly high scoring game. Probably in the 30s or mid-to-low 40s.

Back in the day - when Nebraska was typically favored - we were a team that rushed for 300 yards and passed for 150 (on a good day). Nobody fretted about Nebraska's inconsistent passing game and poor-armed QB (Crouch and Frost were .500 passers who almost never looked off a primary receiver and had trouble hitting wide-open receivers in stride.) Back in the day, going 12 for 20 for 160 yards was a good passing day because that was exactly enough efficiency to set up the run. After all the whining and teeth gnashing and Watson bashing, we look a lot more like that offense. Not so much because the play calling and so-called "offensive identity" has changed, but because the offensive line is starting to gel.

This is still a young team and I kinda like that. Big problem this week will be turnovers. Especially early. You just can't have them.

I could care less about the hitch in Martinez's throwing motion. I want to see the killer instinct, especially when he's allowed to call plays to exploit whatever he sees.

Very well said. +1

Bingo. Excellent post.

You know everyone on ESPN picked Wisconsin over Nebraska, so no upset alert there. Mark May made it sound like its not even going to be close.

I fully expect this to be a hard fought game. a shoot out. an ugly game penalty wise.

With a lot of new guys on the OL, i expect a few false starts, its going to be a rough first half of the game, we may even be a few possessions behind by half time. But i think we come back out in the second half swinging to catch up on offense and it will be decided in the 4th quarter as to who wins.

Im picking Nebraska to win.

Neb 38 - Wis 35

I'm calling it right now. Jamal Turner wins this game for us on a simple slant route he shakes and bakes the secondary with 2 TD, inlcuding a late 4th Q TD that pulls off the upset.

The spin on the could be, "despite stacking the box the Nebraska backfield has combined for 800 yards rushing and 14 Touch Downs". I keep hearing about the 300 yard backs for Wisconsin and I know they are very good but our 400 yard backs are on the field together not one at a time.
