What is a True Husker Fan?

We have been in the top 10 for most of the year and won ten games the last two years, how is that not mattering. or do we need to start paying for Championships like Auburn and USC? Which would you prefer?

 
Hammerhead, you can do two things as well. if you don't like the way the huskers are playing, find some other team who fits your expectations, or put up with my criticism of you and the other negative fans, just like the players have to put up with you. Why do i have to leave if i don't agree with your negativity. am i not accepted on here unless i bash?

 
You have a point - we need to do it the right way. But, like I said, it's STILL about championships. And just because we were ranked in the top 10 doesn't mean we belonged there. Heck, I'd like to just make it through a year without getting EMBARRASSED on national TV. Just one season.

Because football is all we got here - and though it may sound kinda dumb, but we really care A LOT about how those college kids do on that field.

 
I think what people dont realize is that there is a difference between pointing out flaws or criticizing things we are doing wrong, and flat-out complaining (and flat-out insulting players/coaches). How much stuff would you really say to Taylor? Or Tim? You wouldn't go up to Taylor and say, "You're f'ing garbage, why the f#*k isn't Brion playing...you're never gonna make it at quarterback" ...No, you'd say "Your big-play ability is great, but you need to spend time working on your reads and your mid-range passing accuracy because it costs us at times"

It is about championships, but if we run our coaches and players out of town, then we will just be colorado......who gets embarassed every week. WE need to appreciate what we have and build on it with patience and not become a coaching carosel like notre dame, because that is what i feel like we are becoming.

You hit the nail on the head....Those College KIDS are who make us happy, and if can't support them, than what do we have?

Ummmmmm, wouldn't that make me "not a real fan"? I love this team. If you think I don't have a right to criticize the team I love, the fault is with your ability to reason logically, not my fanhood.

The players don't have to put up with "people like me" (and I'm not a "negative fan" by any means, I'm just a realist) unless they look on here. If they played poorly, what would they expect to see?

Because if all you're going to do is b!^@h about the fans, you're not going to make many friends on here. What have you done other than bashing people so far? You just have a different target.

If you actually have something to add to all those discussions that you'd love to see on here (which exist, but you apparently refuse to see thus far because as you said yourself, some people just aren't happy if they don't have something to complain about), by all means, add to them. Complaining about people complaining on this thread, but adding absolutely nothing to the discussions that actually pique your interest, adds nothing of value to this forum.

Hammerhead, if you don't think the players look on here, you are misguided, and even if they don't, their friends and families do, and it gets back to them, and do you think people tell them how great people are talking about them? NO, because that doesn't happen, it is mostly negative. And i only threw out the real fans reference as a talking point to see what people thought. I even stated afterward that it really is up to each of you to decide, and if you think that bashing and being negative and pointing out all that is bad bad bad, then by all means, keep doing it if it makes you feel better. I just wanted to give everyone a different perspective, and quickly realized that unless you are bashing or being negative on this board, there is no place for you here. I will go toe to toe with anyone in a bar or mutual setting discussing the problems and issues that I have with the team, but it doesn't get back to players, and doesn't have an impact. This does, and you can say it doesn't and can think that they hsould be able to handle it, but most of the people on here can't handle me...another voice...coming in here and calling fellow fans out, so how can we expect them to......just sayin.

 
1/2fullhusker is right. For years I have been coming to this board and posting comments anonymously under the guise of a true husker fan. Stopping in to post my opinion of various topics. All the time without revealing my true identity. Well this is it, it is time to come out, so to speak, and let everyone know just who I am, I for one will no longer be put in the category of "hiding behind anonymity" True fans should face each other, so in that vain, my name is.....Stephen Glass

A true Husker fan should be a combination of both. They acknowledge where the team can do better, or what should be better each game, but AT THE SAME TIME they don't overreact to the smallest of things and try to put things in perspective.

A true Husker fan would support the team through thick or thin, and at any point will not throw a player or a coach under the bus for a HUMAN mistake.

A true Husker fan accepts that the possibility of a bad game is likely, and [while they may hate to see the team lose [i mean, who doesn't?]] when that game comes they hope the bad loss will teach the team a lesson instead of throwing the whole season to the wolves.

A true Husker fan STANDS UP AND SHOUTS during Husker games, and doesn't tell people to, "sit down, sonny"

A true Husker fan doesn't make faulty causality and slippery slope tactics to scare fans into there beliefs.

There's more, but you get the point: A true Husker [as any true fan should] fan looks at all sides of the multiple sided dice and knows that when issues arise, everything isn't bad, but the team can always improve.

What I mean is, the players and their families, friends, etc. aren't forced to look here. If the players do decide to look here, or ask those who browse or post on this site what the general consensus is, they have to expect the criticism, and they have to be prepared to deal with it. I have absolutely nothing personal against Bo, Taylor, or any of the other coaches or players. Like others have said, they're college kids who (I hope) bust their asses to play for this program, and they committed to play for the team that I love. That said, when I feel that they're not getting the job done, I reserve the right to express my thoughts on it. Everytime a team loses, this is how their fans react, no matter what team it is. It sucks, but losing sucks too. All we want is a method that minimizes how much we have to go through the whole process. We all have different ideas of what that method is, and a lot of times, the disagreement gets heated. Again, it sucks, but it's something you deal with as a member of a message board.

If you'd like to discuss more positive topics, there are plenty of options for you here. By all means, please participate in those discussions.

 
Well said and i respect that. Never once did i say that criticism is not warranted. Losing does suck, and when you lose and hear how people think you are the sole reason and think that you need immediately replaced, it makes it that much worse.

I sum it up as being like and accident, no one likes that it happened, but everyone wants to look, and that is why players, family, friends look on here, just to get a peek at the crashscene.....

I remember the years of Osborne and how he struggled to win the bowl games against speedier opponents. I remember the ones in which a call here or there decided a championship, or just another top five finish. The thing that set it apart from today, was that fact that the criticism was done in local coffee shops, in the stadium, or at someone's home during the game.....IN PERSON. If you criticized, everyone saw who it was and you had to back up your claims. Now, anyone can come on here and spew hate and criticisim knowing that no one will know who they are and that they cannot not held accountable for it, which is unlike what the players and coaches have to answer to, because they cannot hide. If you yelled at a quarterback in the past at a game, they could see who it was, as could several hundred fans around you, thus keeping things in check. Now, that same person can Boldly(insert sarcasm) comment on here and remain anonymous.

I am as frustrated as anyone and as competitive as anyone when it comes to not only Husker football, but life, but I have realized that negativity does nothing but break down people and solves absolutely nothing. If you have kids, you should know this. Speaking of which, those of you criticizing, would you be doing and saying the same things about replacing the quarterback, safety, etc,. if it was your son, or would you want to encourage and support them to get better? So i go back to my original question, What makes a true Husker fan? Only you can answer that i guess, but please think about it, because these players and coaches have enough to worry about week in and week out from the other teams and fans throughout the country and national media, without having to also deal with it from their own.....so called fanbase.

Ok, I'm done, I hope some of you think hard about this and begin actually supporting the team and not being part of the problem. I for one will be at the game tomorrow, standing, cheering and supporting my team, because they need it, and as a fanbase, so do we.........

Very well put 1/2fullhusker. I couldn't agree more even though I slip up from time to time in the heat of moment. It is one thing to offer constructive criticism or even to join in some humorous anecdotes but it is another thing entirely to pile on when it is clear things are beginning to snowball.

That's true. I'm sure it's not easy for the players. Hopefully it motivates them to play better.

By the way, apologies if I came across a little harsh earlier.
