1 Marine vs. 30 Cops

I will put my feelings about this in these terms: I am an RA at UNO this year, and recently talked with two girls who had two of their roommates (four person rooms) moved out due to a dispute with a boyfriend. The boyfriend was a veteran, and when the now-gone girl and the girls still here got into it, he came out and started yelling at them about how he was a solider and didn't fight overseas to come back to have his girlfriend disrespected like this.

Ok it bugs me so I'll say it, he's a Marine. Not a Soldier. Not in the Army.

I stand by my statement. Army/marine/navy/air force. They all stand for the same purpose and I respect the fact he fights for our country and his whole family did. Much more noble then me in that aspect. However parading his uniform around just to have his voice heard seems like an improper way to use your uniform.

And in my mind soldier and marine are in the same boat when it comes to fighting for our country. I understand your argument.

I didn't mean to criticize your statement, in fact I agree with you completely, just the word choice irked me a bit. To quote E.B. Sledge “Stop calling that guy soldier. He's a Marine. Can't you see his emblem? He's not in the army. Don't insult him.”

I think that somehow insults soldiers, and last time i checked i respect them just as much as marines or anyother branch of military.

This guys obviously thinks he is more important than these cops but last time i check police put there life on the line every single day. Especially New York police..

My dad is a police officer, so i am 100% bias and feel for them.

I think he has a point... He is justifying the fact you shouldnt be able to yell at people just because you're a veteran.

If that was taken from the 'Occupy Wall Street' demonstrations, and the arrests the NYPD was making, then I'm totally on board with the Marine. Peaceful protests are protected under the Bill of Rights, something that seems to be forgotten, especially when the ultra wealthy want the 'eyesore' removed.

How does he know the cops he was yelling at were involved? That would be like me yelling at him for what happened at Guantanamo Bay. There was nothing peaceful about what he was doing. He made it very clear he was ready to get violent.

Just watching the backgrounds in the video, the cops were there doing something, and based on time frame the OWS would fit. You don't get large groups of cops just standing around for no good reason.

And no point did I think the Marine was threatening violence. Loud does not equal violence. Nor does calling someone else a coward.

He has spend time in the service defending the nation he loves, and clearly felt the rights that he put his life on the line for were being infringed upon by the police. And from what I have seen in the news, he would be right.

Agree with strigori. He may have been fired up, but he clearly was not about to get violent with those cops.

PFC Snuffy joined the National Guard and is finally home after training so he thought he'd use his uniform to make a political statement at a flag burning in Lousiana. PFC Snuffy was a very dumb PFC and is now a very sad PFC.

That comes off as aggressive to me. The marine did nothing legally wrong, however the escalated voice doesn't help any situation at all.

His point is 100% valid and I am not for one second arguing against that. I just think there is a better way to go about this then he did.

I wasn't there and so some of you could be correct that those police were being violent in which case i would retract my statement.

I only have what we saw in the video to go by... I do think his intentions are good, but tit just comes off as aggressive and if it wasn't for the mild mannered cops, tehre could have been an escalated situation.

If you truly have respect for all the branches of the military, then you'll make sure not to call a Marine a Soldier. A Marine doesn't want to be called a Soldier just as much as a Soldier doesn't want to be called a Marine/Sailor/Airman. Though the difference may seem small to you, it is a huge difference to those who serve (such as myself).
