KU to Introduce Charlie Weis as Football Coach Friday

I can't figure out whether Weis is a great coach, or a bum. When he was at ND they were just so so--flashes of greatness followed by periods of incompetency. Then Weis goes to KC as OC, and the Chiefs catch fire on offense. Practically unstoppable. Then he hires on as Florida's OC, and the Gators pretty much suck on offense. What gives? Is Weis a great coach or a bum?

I vote bum. Abrasive personality, unfettered ego, and disingenuous to the nth degree.

Reports today indicate that he hated his time in KC. That he just bought a horse farm in Ocala, Florida (to be near his son). That he likely needs additional surgery so he won't be able to recruit much initially. That Muschamp heard it not from Charlie, but while on a recruiting visit.

If he couldn't win at Notre Dame with their publicity machine and fawning network(s)...............why doe an A.D. at Kansas believe he will produce at a basketball school? With his underwhelming personal grace??

Of course, when he fails (and I predict it will be one of the greatest coaching mis-hires of recent memory), he will fall back on the caveat that Turner left a bare cupboard. eh.........kind of like what TG inherited.

Kansas would be happy to go 6-6 every year as opposed to Notre Dame. KU was always a basketball school. A good school doesn't have both. As long as Kansas doesn't have losing seasons Weis will be fine and the expectations aren't as high.

(60-64, 67-68, 75-76, 91-92, 94-95 & 05-08) They are going to lose and lose often. Weis is a puzzling hire. He struggled recruiting to ND and running an offense both there and his one year at Florida. He will have no where near the talent or draw to ku as there was at those schools. He so far has assembled a staff that includes a former NFL player that has 5 years coaching experiance total, all at the HS level. A "OC" (Weis will call the plays) that was the HC of 1-11 Akron team and a QB coach also from 1-11 Akron who coached the #104 rated passing offense this last year.

The "As long as Kansas doesn't have losing seasons Weis will be fine and the expectations aren't as high" statment is almost comical. Out of all those .500 or above runs you'll notice the 05-08 run. Mangino was the best ku ever had, the first coach to EVER take them to back to back bowl games. Second most wins (most for modern era) and the only coach since 1953 to even have a ku career record above .500. He was quickly kicked out as ku forgot just how bad of a program they are.

Truth is Weis will be lucky to get a few winning seasons right now. They are woefully low on talent and have decieded that having an all "name team" is more important that people who are great coaches. They still have to compete in the big12 but now in a round robin format and not divisions (no more avoiding the top 3 south teams in one season like they did in 07), plus this big12 has a ksu team that doesnt suck balls, and Baylor that is filled with talented playmakers and an OSU is no longer a pushover. there are now 3 extra BSC teams from texas to compete with for recruits (TCU, SMU & Houston) & btw there still recruiting kids to ku, not ND or Florida or NU or OU...freakin ku which is below at minimum 8 of the current 10 big12 teams, will be behind atleast 8 of the new big12 teams (quite frankly a very valid arguement could be made that they are worst school to go to for fb in the big12 period) and also behind a lot more regional teams that are in the big10 and SEC.

This I just dont get. There are plenty of schools who are good at both, even some that have been elite at both. There is nothing new to teams having top25 FB and MBB in the same year or years. That includes a good number of teams that finish top10 in FB and advance to the sweet16/elite 8 or beyond in the same sports year.

C'mon you have bass ackwards. Weis was a great recruiter who got "the type of athlete that Notre Dame can't get." We were flush with 5*s at the skill positions. We had no power running but otherwise the offense was fine and shattered all the our passing records.

Weis lost because he couldn't develop the players into tough minded football players. The line could never run block and the pass blocking was inconsistent. The running backs rarely broke a tackle. Clausen would hang onto the ball for 15 seconds before risking his precious TD:int ratio, even if we were behind with during the two minute drill he would prefer to take the sack.

We had no true nose tackle and had to convert an LB the last two years [no jucos were allowed]. And the defense couldn't tackle, the backs were slow, and no one really knew who was in charge pf the defense because he kept changing coordinators.

The assistants named so far are his old staff members. Ianello is said to be a good recruiter. A few of Weis's old coordinators appear to have been arrested.

Weis's offenses are dependent on Brady-like quarterback play. When the other pieces aren't there, such as Florida this year, they stall.

He was a great recruiter, but he had no "tough minded football players, his line could never run block and the pass blocking was inconsistent, his running backs rarely broke a tackle his qb hang onto the ball to long, he didnt get a true nose tackle and had to convert an LB, his defense couldn't tackle & the backs were slow." BUT besides all that he was a GREAT RECRUITER!!

Outside of Willinghams teams that he took over he has had one season where his offense was good. One of 4. His nationally rankings from year 3 on at ND and his year at Florida are #119 (dead last), #66 (bottom half), #8 & #102 (our of 120). In other words his offense is not "fine". You also make my point by saying that he is completely handcuffed with out a top QB. In otherwords he cant coach around that fact and he just took the worst BCS job in college football. That makes sense...I'm sure he will do just fine.

As far as your flush full of 5 :star 's, ND did get some, 6 over a 4 year period. They they had some really nice nationally ranked classes. But every CFB fan worth his salt knows that Rivals/Scout/ESPN are doing things on opinions and certian teams will always receive the benifit of a bump in player rankings. But with that said, a "great recruiter", recruits to his teams needs. Recruits to his system. Recruits football players, not kids who measure well in their underware and are not "tough minded". For an example, Missouri recuiting rankings generally suck when all you look at is stars. However, nearly every year there are kids going early in the draft. Plenty of free agents that are being picked up after words because they compete and are tough football players. In last nights NFL game there were 4 Mizzou kids starting, 1-2 :star , 2-3 :star & 1-5 :star . The best part is the 2 star is the best of the group and the 5 star the worst. Rankings really dont mean anything. Recruting the right players is what matters. And clearly according to you he couldnt do it at ND. Thats why I personally feel he will bomb at ku.

I guess the way it looks to me, I'm not backwards at all. Im spot on. But thats the fun in having different opionions and points of view.

Then we're probably saying the same thing with different words. Weis's Os are great when the pieces are in place, Florida had no chance last year with missing pieces on the line fs the SEC.

There are some programs like Mizzou, Nebraska[especially in the 80s], and Iowa that do a lot with unknown or 3* players. I call that "development" which Weis had no idea about. He could develop QBs and WRs but that was it.

I heard that KSU takes a lot of JUCOs which ND doesn't allow. Weis might get some mileage out of that.
