Diamond formation

Not sure how multiple formations change how a Oline blocks? last I checked 99% of our formations were TGCGT, the difference that changes blocking schemes is the defense, a 4-3 is a different blocking scheme than a 3-4. But if we are 2 tight end, or diamond or 1 back with 4 wide and you want a iso run to the right it is going to be blocked by the OL the same regardless of the formation. Now if your saying that a belly option is going to be blocked different that a spread, or a zone read than yes you are correct but this isnt high school ball we need different blocking schemes, hell run blocking and pass blocking are much more different than if a Tackle has end contain or doubles down of a DE.

perhaps "formations" wasn't the best word. point is (as deckedinpink mentioned) - different offenses recruit different offensive linemen. if the type of offense didn't dictate the type of OL play, this wouldn't be the case. we can't be all of those offenses and be successfull as an OL. we'll be 35 pounds overweight and a half second too slow when it comes time to pull a guard to run the option, or we'll be 30 pounds underweight trying to block that nose guard for 6 seconds while we wait for a this complex pass play to develop.

As to the diamond formation, I enjoy seeing it, but a base offense it is not. I think we will def continue to use it, but it is too much of a gimick to run as our base. Base sets need balance, the diamond puts a larger demand on running and not enough on the passing side. The ratio of playmakers for the diamond is 2:1 running over passing, where the I formation is 1:1 or the pistol is also 1:1, which makes them more effective balancing the pass to rush ratio because defenses are less likely to put 8 in the box and put pressure on the back 3 to cover 1 on 1 with WR's and TE's. or to the other extreme, if your playing a 1 back set with 4 wide your ratios switch to 1:2 rushing to passing player makers, assuming our offense and a running QB. You cant overload a balance set because they have the ability to quickly go where you left open. So we should motion into the diamond or the 4 wide, or the wildcat formation. Because those formations are there to catch a defense ill prepared to cover the players on the field without calling a time or having the wrong personal on the field. The diamond formation for me should get 5-10 hits a game, if the defense cant adjust then we can use it more, but finding a base offensive scheme is needed.

i'm convinced a large portion of that stems from the fact that we run out of 15 different formations, with a different blocking scheme for each. we can't consistently get a single one of them right. Our OL has to learn to block for the option, zone read, spreadish crap...some pro-style formations, TE heavy power sets, etc. if we had an offensive identity maybe our OL could form one as well, and with that comes consistency. If we aren't consistent in anything we do (and don't anyone give me any BS about the defense "figuring" us out - that's the least of our worries), then I'm convinced that we are never going to break that 10 win barrier.

I don't care if we're G-Tech option, Oregon zone-read, a Missouri spread, or a Leach air-raid attack - as long as we're consistent and we execute our offense - not let the defense dictate so much of the game...we'll improve. The formation, the offense...doesn't really matter if you can't execute - and we can't execute trying to be all of the above. no college team could.

Uncle Milt said many, many times that reps is the #1 priority for his Olines & with us changing offenses every five minutes it's no wonder we're inconsistent and make mistakes by the boatload.

Absolutely right on that, and no offense on the formations thing and your spot on about having the right bodies for the right schemes importantance. Its like the transition from from our Big 12 LB to our B1G linebackers, we needed to adapt our players to fit a different style of play.

As to our OL and its problems, we cleaned up a lot of problems we used to have with stupid peneties ie: false starts and holdings. We also implimented a new offensive set and joined a new conference. I am willing to forgive some of the problems last year to those changes. This year barring any major player hiccups I think we will see a major improvement from the OL, it appears we have depth at every position. Almost the whole 2 deep has playing or starting expierence except center. The center position is obviously in flux right now but I think the to likely starters look to be able to play the position. This is also the year we hopefully see the difference a year under two OL coaches has improved rep count and overall understanding of positions by 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Well said, i agree we should see alot of improvement on an Oline that was pretty decent last year.

As far as our offensive identity goes, I also think maybe this is what Aaron Green saw this spring and why he left while he still could. With our bigger backs and Rex maybe we emphasized running the ball between the tackles more this spring to set up play action. I see us being more like Alabama then Oregon, but with a few Oregon type Diamond, Zone Read, option formations in the hurry up to take advantage of a tireing, out of postion defense. We may have repped alot at the power running game this spring to make that our bread and butter go to offense and that something Green wasnt very good at, hes good in space.

Totally agree that the blocking and execution has to improve on a consistant basis, irregardless of the formation(s) we go with, but HOW???? Is it a just a matter of our players getting more experience, is it a coaching problem? I guess I'm not sure.

It gives T-Mart a better chance to see the defense. Let's face it, he doesn't make good decisions unless he's in the gun. However, it puts him 3-5 steps from the line of scrimmage and it always seems much slower to materialize. Hard to compare though - the option wasn't run very well last season.

If we where an air raid offense I would no longer be a Nebraska football fan even the spread for me is just painful to watch. I like ground and pound all the way straight running it up the middle and try and stop me. And recruit huge 320 pound lineman from all over and turn it back into the pro factory for lineman it once was.

Why? What does the offense matter if we're good at it?

The N on our helmet doesn't mean "Option." It's just the base set we were most successful at over the last few decades. We could run anything and it wouldn't matter - even the West Coast Offense - as long as we were able to move the ball and score effectively.

That has to be the bottom line. You can't marry yourself to one style of offense.

I want running as long as there is no offense such as the west coast, Or the spread. If it becomes something that is primarily passing I can consider myself being done watching Nebraska football. Your talking to the guy that sets the setting on NCAA 12 to the option attack and 100% running no matter what.

That's not true at all. Moore, Sirles, Choi, Arod, Long - those are the only guys with any game experience on the O-line.

That's not true at all. Moore, Sirles, Choi, Arod, Long - those are the only guys with any game experience on the O-line.

so true, experienced players=depth=we don't have much on the O line.........just a lot of po=tential!.
