Rex Burkhead! I think that Barner kid from Oregon is a good darkhorse. I'm betting Barkley.

 
Geno Smith has decent stats, but when I watch him he just appears to be a benefactor of that system and doesn't pass my eyeball test. The other 3 choices I can't argue with. It would be nice if Nebraska actually had a legitimate candidate for once.

I would probably throw Clemson's Sammy Watkins in there. That kid is a playmaker.

Personally, my pre-season top 5 would be:

1. Matt Barkley

2. Montee Ball

3. Geno Smith

4. De'Anthony Thomas

5. Rex Burkhead

I would be somewhat surprised if Rex does make it, to be honest. He's freakin' awesome, but he isn't exactly a big-play RB, and a flashy highlight reel is usually what it takes to get heisman attention.

Other names that will probably get some buzz:

-Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

-Tajh Boyd, Clemson

-Landry Jones, Oklahoma

-Denard Robinson, Michigan

-Knile Davis, Arkansas

Its Barkley v Lattimore IMO.

I can't see Ball putting up the same stats as last year, incredible RB just that 33 TDs is an insane amount. Tough to match.

ESPN will be all over Tyrann Mathieu this season, guy is a great return man. He is a big playmaker, but gets beat quite a bit on an island. I think he is overrated as a cover corner.

E.J. Manuel, Matt Barkley, Montee Ball, Marcus Lattimore. I think it'll be a two horse race between Manuel, QB fr Fla St and Matt Barkely, USC QB. I don't think Wisconsin or S. Caroliny will be ranked high enough for Montee Ball or Marcus Lattimore to get the necessary attention. Because the Heisman goes to the best QB/RB on a top 5 team.

You realize who just won the heisman right? That alone shatters what you just said. In general, I agree with you that this is how it works, but if another player has a great season, it's possible that someone on a lesser-rated team wins the heisman.

It's not like Baylor was unranked. They finished AP #13. But RG3 was an outlier. So instead of looking at only 2011 let's look at the previous 80 Heismans. For the most part the trophy goes to the best RB/QB on one of the top few teams--with the occasional WR. And Charles Woodson.

I'm not sure what the lowest ranked team was to have a Heisman player. But I doubt if there are very many Heisman winners from teams that fell much below the top 20.
