Tennis Balls

International Man of Mystery
For years I've been reading about receiving corps around the country catching tennis balls to improve their hand/eye coordination, and I've been wondering if Nebraska does this - and if not, why not.

It appears we are, or at least the DBs are, and if they are I can't imagine the WRs aren't. From a practice report:

>> Several defensive backs staying late after practice and working on catching drills. They hauled in footballs from the JUGS machine. Tennis balls, too.

I take two good things from this - the tennis ball drill has been shown to be effective throughout college football. I'm glad we're using it. Second, if you read through this report, there are several instances of players staying after practice to put in extra work. Gotta love that.

Catching tennis balls is one thing, but real improvement has been shown when you cut the tennis ball in half and run a couple rubberbands through it and put it in the palm of the hand. Teaches kids to catch on the fingertips. Really works well.

Our son who will be attending Central College in Iowa is a WR and they sent him his workouts

and drills for the summer and he was doing this. it helps with having soft hands

A few years back ESPN College Gameday featured Texas Tech showing their receivers working on catching drills using tennis balls.

Similar in nature, I remember hearing that the oregon uses laser pointers to improve vision with their ballcarriers.
