Why not Brion Carnes

Here it is: The Holy Grail Of Information

I just got done reading this entire thread, and it's funny reading these posts when I actually know the answers. Wish I would have got on here two days ago when this parade got started. Anyway, about a month ago, Lincoln's Finest thought I was going a little too fast for my own good. Got into STOP class, and lo and behold, Will Compton is there too. Jackpot! So I sit next to him in the back, and over the next 4 hours asked him some various questions about life, football, etc, and the quarterback question was one of them. Here is his answer, direct from the horse's mouth:

On Martinez:

"Taylor has really improved this summer. He's just as quick as his freshman year, but his passes are more accurate, with more zip. The biggest difference is that he doesn't stare at the receiver before the throw. When he was a freshman, the linebackers used find the receiver he was staring at, and T-off on just that guy. We can't do that anymore."

On Tommy and Brion:

"Tommy's made huge progress, and he'll be real good for us someday. He's basically the same athlete as Brion, but he actually knows where to put the ball and when, like how to run the offense."

On what he does in the summers, besides practice and lifting:

"Fishing, dude. Love it. Just me and the lake, with no other worries."

I'm paraphrasing all of this, because I can't remember his exact wording, but your get the idea. Martinez is the guy, and always has been, with Armstrong as a close second, and Carnes slipping to third-string because he can't run the offense. I'll bet dollars to donuts we see Armstong cleaing it up in any of the first 4 games, assuming we have a commanding lead. I'll be very surpirsed if Carnes gets on the field all season.
FYI: don't put quote marks around it if it isn't a quote.

That is some interesting stuff right there. So everything that I have heard about Carnes over his career, I can draw the conclusion that he is just not an intelligent individual.

Right. Are you telling me that Will Compton got a traffic ticket and it wasn't reported and dissected here on HB?

/jk. Thanks for the info.

@HuskerShark - that pretty well sums up what I've heard many as well

@KC - I'd still bet that Carnes is getting the few snaps this year. Armstrong will redshirt if possible. Which is another discussion entirely. If Armstrong is the "#2" guy, and the season plays out like last with the #2 guy only getting about 20-30 snaps...do you let Carnes take those...or do you burn Armstrongs redshirt so he's a Junior when he earns the starting role for NU? I'm gonna give em to Carnes if I'm Bo.

I think the one thing that everyone can agree on is that we need to get many more snaps for our #2 or even #3 QB. I'm not sure if the answer is inserting Carnes/Armstrong in like Cody Green his Freshman year was for a series early in games or not like Watson did.

During Tommy's recruitment, Tim Beck told him straight up he's not redshirting. We'll see how it plays out this year. Taylor might have improved enough that we can afford to give the #2 more snaps. And the staff might be more comfortable with Armstrong out there than they were with Carnes. Who knows?

I think Armstrong won't redshirt, but Johnny Stanton will. Armstrong will be a Junior when Stanton is a RS Frosh. That should play out nicely.

Im willing to talk about any #2 qb. It doesnt just have to be about carnes. Lol. And any #2 running back so that we can spell burkhead from time to time and gain some experience for the younger guys. 284 carries is too many IMO

I hated the decision to burn Cody Green's redshirt, and I will hate the decision if Bo does the same to Armstrong. BUT, with that said, if Martinez goes down, we NEED a second guy who can be a place-holder and run plays to Burkhead. I'm not even sure if Brion can do that, in which case Armstrong needs to be that guy. Pray Martinez stays healthy and we don't have to talk about this anymore.

It makes no sense at all to argue that Carnes should be given a start. The only thing worth debating is why he doesn't get any time in our runaway victories, or defeats. Only 2 pass attempts last year? Burkhead had that many last year. If he really is number two then he absolutely needs to see more game time in case Taylor goes down.
Bingo. People talk about how we weren't blowing teams out last year, but forget the stretches where we were completely demolished and kept Taylor, among other starters in the game. The one time Carnes got extended action in one of our blowout victories, he was asked to run the option probably six straight times.

The coaches aren't flawless or absolutely above criticism, so guys, please don't freak out if I'm suggesting they could have managed their in-game personnel decisions a little better at a few points during the year.

Brion Carnes' recruitment came down to Nebraska and Western Kentucky
He also decomitted from South Florida, and Taylor Martinez's recruitment at QB came down to Nebraska and....nobody.

Brion and Tommy do seem very similar - Brion with more athleticism in the run game perhaps, and Tommy more of the sit-back and pass guy. Brion has in the past looked like a very fine player in a couple scrimmages, so I do hope he's carried that over to this year. I think if nothing else he'll make a solid #2 and don't see any reason why we'd want to be burning Tommy's redshirt.

Here is what I believe and take it for what its worth. In our offense a healthy Martinez makes us go. Here is why. We all know about his running ability that really hasnt been the same since Kansas St 2010. When he gets healthy and the rumor now is that he finally is healthy, he CAN make cuts. Something he hasnt been able to do for a while now. Martinez knows it, his teammates know it and so do the coaches.

I think alot of the optimism going on is because Taylor is healthy and we are finally going to see the offense explode. The improved passing will be nice but, its Taylors healthy running ability that will improve our passing game. Anyone ever take notice we never saw many boot legs or sprint outs etc... Just makes me think it was all part of protecting Taylor's high ankle sprain.

Its just a thought with no proof, just my gut feeling
I think you either know some insider scoop "or" you're a very, very lucky at guessing. Or, I should say I sure hope you are as I've heard the basically same thing from two people I trust.

If you're right SreeterCL, I fully agree this year's offense is going to be flat-out nasty. As you say, when he busts a couple warp7 50+ yd TD runs you can bet the ranch opponent DCs are going to compensate in a big, big way. We'll see lots of wide, WIDE open wrs to be sure.

ps....high ankle sprain on one leg, turf toe on the other.....I've been told it takes awhile sometimes for those two types to come around.
You hit it right on the nose about those injuries. They can hamper someones ability for much longer than one would think.

Nope no insiders...well...anymore. I just know how specific injuries work. Also I think I read an article about Taylor getting healthy just a few weeks back. Like I said IMO were in for a treat offensively AND defensively.
