Why not Brion Carnes

You guys talk about depth charts like it's the end-all be-all. Sometimes college football coaches get it wrong too. I'm not saying that's what's happening in this case I'm just saying that there is that possibility that it could be happening in this case. Could it be we arent getting good quarterbacks because we don't treat the ones that we have good?

I am not a Tim Beck fan. But I am a Bo Pelini fan. Never once did I say that they don't know anything about football. Never once did I say that BC should be the starting quarterback. yes I am aware that I am not at practice every day and the coaching staff is. Moving forward if we don't bring in better quarterbacks that can produce at a higher level we will never be at a championship level.
Would it be at all possible to see how Taylor does this year before we jump off this proverbial cliff? I mean I know it is impossible for a player to improve with experience and consistent coaching and all, but maybe we could just let his play speak???

I don't have a problem with seeing how Taylor Martinez works out. I think you are missing the point. I think you will be great for the first few nonconference games. Aside from UCLA. The real test will be when we get into Big Ten Play. I imagine us finding a way to win nine or 10 games. I know that is a good season. But is it a championship season?

It has nothing to do with post count whatsoever. I'm just so sick & tired of people trashing our qb endlessly. "Carnes should be our stater", "Tmart s*cks", "Carnes would be starting but he's in Bo's doghouse", "Tmart isn't a real qb" etc, etc x 10,000.

Why it's perfectly ok to attack our own players but not internet posters is just over my head.

I think Bo & Beck know a little something about cfb. They're at every practice and there's a good chance they just might know who our best qb is.

Regarding the topic...Carnes won't be the #2 this year IMO.

Isn't this message board which means it's an open forum to say whatever you think? Do you really think I have attacked Taylor Martinez? If anyone is being attacked it's me. LOL

Nobody is attacking you. Just your opinion. Stick around and post for a bit. You'll be welcomed. But if you say something others consider silly, expect it to be shredded. That doesn't mean it's a personal attack against you.

The title of your thread is "why not Brion Carnes"... Then you say here that you're not saying he's better or that the coaches probably know best. Then you say Martinez has given a "mediocre" effort against B10teams. When stats are provided that he actually took care of the ball and played pretty well, you say you weren't actually calling for Carmes to start. You question the decision who should start, then admit you're not in practice everyday and probly don't know as much as the coaches, who see him everyday.

It seems confusing to me as to what you actually want out of this thread?

Look, we are all in w Martinez. He has two yrs left, and by any indication he will at least improve, certainly not regress. Carnes not seeing the field or getting a "fair shot" can be debated, no question. But the question posed in your topic has been answered. Carnes simply is not ready for whatever reason, and Martinez has shown enough that until someone Takes his position, it's his to lose.

Of course coaches make mistakes on the depth chart. But, its not like T-mart is a first year starter now, this will be his third year so I would guess that the coaches have a pretty good read on the QB situation.

I play the guy that is the best at that position. If someone else wants the job, they just have to go an win it. Maybe it is that no one else can win the job from him.

Persecution complex? sheez...

Lighten up francis.

Brion Carnes' recruitment came down to Nebraska and Western Kentucky, a team that lost every single game the previous season. This shouldn't be a nail in the coffin, so to speak, regarding Carnes' ability, but I think it's an interesting variable nonetheless - we almost lost the guy to a terrible team. I don't care what coaching motivations he had to go there, that's not good.

Most everything we know about Carnes' has been word of mouth. We haven't see the guy play many real snaps, and as errant as Taylor Martinez can be at times, I trust the coaches to know who's better than who. If they say Martinez is better than we really have no way to argue the point. Furthermore, competition has been abysmal at this spot the last two years. Who knows how close Carnes really was to pushing Martinez, and who knows what Armstrong will be able to do now. Point is, the more talent we get back there, the better the group will be as a whole.

Everyone keeps making this about brion carnes.

Everyone keeps making this about brion carnes. I never once said that he is better. I'm just saying with the mediocre effort that we have gotten from the quarterback position that maybe we should look at other options. We are not able to use all of our weapons because we can't throw screen passes of any kind.

What mediocre effort are you talking about? Surely you're not talking about Taylor Martinez.

Here it is: The Holy Grail Of Information

I just got done reading this entire thread, and it's funny reading these posts when I actually know the answers. Wish I would have got on here two days ago when this parade got started. Anyway, about a month ago, Lincoln's Finest thought I was going a little too fast for my own good. Got into STOP class, and lo and behold, Will Compton is there too. Jackpot! So I sit next to him in the back, and over the next 4 hours asked him some various questions about life, football, etc, and the quarterback question was one of them. Here is his answer, direct from the horse's mouth:

On Martinez:

"Taylor has really improved this summer. He's just as quick as his freshman year, but his passes are more accurate, with more zip. The biggest difference is that he doesn't stare at the receiver before the throw. When he was a freshman, the linebackers used find the receiver he was staring at, and T-off on just that guy. We can't do that anymore."

On Tommy and Brion:

"Tommy's made huge progress, and he'll be real good for us someday. He's basically the same athlete as Brion, but he actually knows where to put the ball and when, like how to run the offense."

On what he does in the summers, besides practice and lifting:

"Fishing, dude. Love it. Just me and the lake, with no other worries."

I'm paraphrasing all of this, because I can't remember his exact wording, but your get the idea. Martinez is the guy, and always has been, with Armstrong as a close second, and Carnes slipping to third-string because he can't run the offense. I'll bet dollars to donuts we see Armstong cleaing it up in any of the first 4 games, assuming we have a commanding lead. I'll be very surpirsed if Carnes gets on the field all season.

Why not Brion Carnes?

Because he is the second best quarterback on the team. /thread

Even the most die hard Martinez supporters would want Carnes to start if the coaching staff made the change. They know who our best option is. I was a bit shocked when Martinez got the call over Lee in 2010... This staff is obviously willing to do whatever it takes to win games.
