Our Receivers/TE's

This is the best group of receivers and TE's that we have had since I can't remember when, IMO. Receivers really are not what Nebraska is known for. So it made me think, how many of our receivers or TE's end up making it to the big league? I think both Cotton and Reed. Then I look at Enunwa, no offense to Niles Paul, but I think Enunwa is a better receiving version of him. Kenny Bell? Jamal Turner? I think all of these guys make the jump. Then there are the young guys who have great potential, its just far too early to tell (Allen and Long). I'm going to say that when it is all said and done, seven receivers/TE's that are currently on the team will make it in the NFL. What do all of you think?

 
In Cotton I see a TE that just about any NFL team would love to have. Reed might be able to find a role on the right team somewhere.

Steven Osborne has the measurables NFL GMs fawn over, if he has a productive season I'd be surprised if a team didn't pick him up. If he doesn't, he could just as easily get lost in the shuffle.

Kenny Bell and Jamal Turner are still young, but I could see them working their way into the league, eventually. Still kind of early for them.

Enunwa has another year at Nebraska, but if his production increases I'd be shocked if he didn't get some serious looks.

 
One of the things I think is getting overlooked during the last game was that there were no drops that I can remember. I remember a few catches, specifically by Cotton, that were not perfect throws but the receivers still managed to catch them. Making those tough catches should only boost Martinez's confidence and his accuracy should improve. I know this is what they are supposed to do, but it hasn't happened consistantly since the Swift/Peterson years.

Guys that have a chance at getting drafted: Kyler Reed and Kenny Bell, possibly Jamal Turner if he turns into the player that we all think he will be. I think that's probably it for receivers getting actually picked up, and that's probably being generous.

Guys that could get a shot at being unsigned free agents and making a team: Ben Cotton, Quincy Enunwa, maybe Steven Osborne, maybe Taariq Allen, maybe Westerkamp. Those are a couple guys that we haven't seen a lot out of yet. That's my breakdown.

 
I think it's unlikely they all make it to the NFL. You have to remember that there are hundreds of teams for the NFL to pick players from if you include lower division schools, meanings thousands of players for only 53 spots on 32 different teams. We also don't know exactly what our quarterback play in the future will be like, but I'm sure you realize all this.

That said, I too am excited about our receiver play. So far, all of these kids are playing pretty well. Steven Osborne's touchdown catch was phenomenal because those are the type of throws you love as a quarterback - just put it up and let your receiver make a play. I love Enunwa because he's great with perimeter blocking and has solid hands, and what's not to love about Bell and his speed. Ben Cotton isn't as fast as Kyler Reed, but he's still the better blocker and I struggle to think of many times where he doesn't come down with a catchable pass. And Reed, what a touchdown catch.

Regardless of mechanics, this is Martinez' third year as quarterback and second year in Beck's system. He's calmed down, the game is slowing, and he's seeing more of the field. It's exciting when you have a quarterback who can now get the ball to these guys effectively. There's a helluva lot of the season left, but right now, things are looking pretty great in the passing game.

Way off base on Cotton. I've seen him listed as 5th best pro prospect at his position. Unless something goes terribly wrong this season, he'll be a high round draft pick.

Kyler Reed will most likely be the undrafted free agent guy.

Agreed. Reed will likely need to find a dallas clark like roll to even make it in the NFL. Maybe if he transitions to WR he has a chance. Cotton is a prototypical TE and will be drafted likely in the 3rd round unless he gets hurt or catches 1000+ yards.

How can that be about cotton? I thought they only got recruited because their Dad was coach? (Sarcasm)

To Huskershark, how can you make a statement like that about Allen and Westerkamp when they are only a true freshman and a RS freshman? I don't know much about Allen but Westerkamp is supposed to be an absolute stud and if we weren't so loaded at WR right now, he would be playing a lot of snaps.

I don't recall ever "making a statement" about anyone. We just haven't seen enough of them for me to predict whether they will get a shot at the NFL or not.

With the TE's, I could see both Reed and Cotton being drafted, honestly. The reason I picked Reed out is because he looked solid in the passing game in the season opener, and I think he has been doing the right things this year to keep up this production.

 
reed was a mackey awards list guy before last season if i remember correctly. the kid can flat out catch the football. a team looking for a good slot receiver might consider picking him up in the late 5th to 7th rounds

I think this goes to show that Bo knows talent, all these guys with the possible exception of Turner were not highly recruited. I would say Enunwa, Reed, Cotton, Turner, and Bell would play at the next level. Too early on the other Cotton, Allen, Long, Westerkamp but they certainly look the part. Westerkamp was considered by some the second best reciever in the 2012 class, and im sure he will be a good one here, maybe the best stats wise now that we are going to be throwing more with Beck. Of course its way to early to proclaim that but the kids got skills and hes going to be a good one. One things for sure, we are going to have some talent and depth at WR for a long time. I was happy to see Long have some good size and he looked like an servicable blocker, should we not land the JUCO kid, which i think we do.

I completely agree with this, but with the development that Fisher is getting out of these guys, I would expect at least a few of these young guys to be able to make the jump.
