NamelessHusker
Longhorns junior quarterback Vince Young will declare for the NFL draft at a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, his godmother told The Dallas Morning News. Young and his mother, Felicia, met with Young's pastor, Samuel H. Smith, in Houston on Sunday before making the decision, Yolanda Lezine told The Morning News According to Lezine, Young was on his way to Austin to tell Texas coach Mack Brown his decision to go pro. "After that performance in the Rose Bowl, I think we all kind of knew which way he was going to go," Lezine told the newspaper. Team and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Texans will pass on Young, a Houston native, and select USC running back Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, pending the formality of Bush announcing that he is turning pro. Almost nothing will change that course, the sources told Mortensen. The Texans will pick up an $8 million option on quarterback David Carr, who was the expansion team's first draft pick four years ago. Texans owner Bob McNair made the decision after getting extensive evaluations from various sources that strongly endorsed Carr, including a favorable report from Dan Reeves, the former longtime NFL coach hired last month as a consultant. USC's Matt Leinart, who could have been the first pick a year ago had he turned pro after his junior season, still remains the consensus top quarterback in the NFL draft, even if Young comes out. For Leinart, he is likely to be the choice of the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 with Young projected to the Tennessee Titans at No. 3. Steve McNair, who has been mentoring Young, including a visit to watch the Rose Bowl, will be lobbying the Titans to select Young with the third pick, Mortensen reported. Of course, McNair has to re-sign with the Titans for that to happen. Leinart also would be desirable to Tennessee, where his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is now calling plays for the Titans. link I bet Callahan is happy to see Vince Young go, along with Lienhart, Bush and possibily Lendale White, along with half of USC's offensive starters. Now that Young is leaving, does that provide a somewhat even matchup next year or would Texas still have the upper hand with a new QB? Quote Link to comment
Roy CO HSKR
Mack Brown, as well as, Paterno, have been stocking up on 4 and 5 star players for several years. That's the reason that Frosh do so well with that supporting cast. Callahan needs about 2-3 more classes to try to get even, since the NU program's recruiting has been in shambles prio to his arrival. Or, in other words, UT next year, without Young, has more talent. (But then so did UM!!.) Quote Link to comment
husker rob
and remember the game against UT is in lincoln next year. Quote Link to comment
HSKRNOKC
Good news indeed. The right decision IMO. The projection is he will be picked 3rd. Quote Link to comment
huskerguy
Texas lost their o-line and their QB (who was their whole offense). There is no clear cut top team in the Big XII Quote Link to comment
IlliniHusker
IMO that NU shouldn't back into the Big 12 championship by having other team players leave early for the NFL. Our attitude should be to develop a team that can beat even the best opponents. Stop and think - if all the Big 12 opponents just get weaker and we win without getting any better, then its a hollow victory. We will just get killed in a bowl game against some other conference's great team. The good news is that NU is developing into a GREAT team. It may be a couple of year's off, but we have to get to the point where we can beat Texas with a Vince Young returning; beat USC with a Reggie Bush returning; even beat Mizzou with a healthy Brad Smith. Our future should depend on us; not on our opponents! Quote Link to comment

THat is not backing into anything, that is just he nature of hte beast in college football. Keep the system going. I think NEbraska knows as well as anyone that you have to ease young players into it. Look what padding stats for Crouch and Frost did the following year. Quote Link to comment
BIGREDIOWAN
I think that this will definately help NU next year and will also build up our confidence even more. We are developing into a good team and illinihusker is right I don't want to beat Texas and USC only because their top players left. I want to beat them because we are just that good. DaveH
While the fact that Texas and USC will loose a lot of their outstanding players helps, they still recruit well every year and undoubtedly have kids waiting in the wings to pick it up. Those two games wil still undoubtedly be our two toughest games of the season in 06. That's not mentioning teams like Iowa State, Colorado and Kansas. Lets see what our team can do against established teams and up n coming teams. Quote Link to comment

raw1
Awww...I am sure Vince Young left for the NFL BECAUSE he didn't want to face the Husker Blackshirts in Lincoln next year. Probably the same reason Bush left USC early. Quote Link to comment
HSKRNOKC
They left early because of the $$$$$$$$$$. The fact that their gone changes the complexion of those games. Its part of college football. With the risk of injury as well as other intangibles, its hard to blame these guys for going for the jump to the NFL. Quote Link to comment
husker rob
neither of them have anything else to prove in college, and why risk an injury that could cost them a very good career in the NFL. i couldnt blame Carricker, if he was a for sure 1st rounder, for leaving but he knows that another stellar year will move his stock up. i bet white leaves early also.
