Changes to the Transfer Portal?

Having one single transfer window during the playoffs is one of the most asinine insane stupid choices that could ever possibly be made.

I expect to see a lot more student athletes ignoring the portal, just leaving one school and enrolling in another.

I never transferred to a different college back in the day, but I assume it isn't a quick/easy thing you can do just on a whim, even if you have good grades? I suppose your transcripts pass for entrance exams, but in this case the player would be coming in as a student, and those admittance decisions are made quite a bit in advance of the semester starting.

They ain't transferrin to play school

Those decisions are fast tracked for athletes. Coaches are priming the admission folks ahead of time. I've seen situations where a student gets their admission packet to a coach and has a decision the same day. When I did it the whole process took 3 days but there was a holiday in there. It would still take some level of 'tampering' to coordinate everything but admissions wouldn't be the hold up. Making sure you have a roster spot on the team you're trying to move to is the long pole in the tent.

Oh I get that, but if you aren't using the sports transfer portal you are indeed transferring to play school ('officially' anyways). How much can the athletic department help if you are not going through the portal? I have no doubt as zeWilbur said that it can be done in one day if you are following the rules/have the athletic department involved.

Right now a lot of schools would be wary of it, but if they limit the portal's open window to be during the playoffs, a lot of players are going to say screw this and just go for it, and the schools will figure out ways to meet the demand.

It's not a total free for all yet but the NCAA keeps losing pretty much every lawsuit thrown their way and people are wising up to the fact that their rules don't really mean jack.

This could all be fixed with :

- one time transfer window in Feb after the season and well before spring ball begins
- one time transfer allowed or 2 year gap between transfers

The problem with a February transfer is that school is already in session. Transfers would not be able to enroll in a new school by this time (most likely). Depending on when their school started, they could get stuck with a bunch of withdraws on their transcripts. Withdraws aren't necessarily bad, but they can be if someone takes financial aid.

This means very little unless somehow they crack down on tampering.
It's also not going to matter when the courts shoot down this attempt by the universities to take away bargaining power from the athletes.

This is all performative nonsense that's simply going to end up in a collective bargaining agreement at some point.
