Changes to the Transfer Portal?

The only good news (if there is any) about the absolute whiplash of news regarding all things logistics in CFB over the past 12 months is that none of the changes will last very long and will be totally different in another 12 months.

I've honestly given up trying to keep track of where things stand and am just waiting and hoping for some eventual stability as something I don't completely hate.

Ha! No kidding!

Just wait until the last game is played...open it for 30 days since this is a big deal for the players and coaches. Then close it up.

I like that too but I think 30 days would overlap with the high school signing day, right? Could always move that back I guess. Then you'd have the transfers sorted and could sign the high schoolers.

They do have to register for and attend classes

Yup. And coaches want them there for spring practice. A portal not opening until late Jan pretty much kills that.

Even with the Jan 2 date, you are going to see a lot of back door deals of guys knowing where they are going before they “officially”enter the portal. I mean that happens now with the portal opening in early December.

Why not just have a flex portal date where kids get 2 weeks to enter the portal following their current teams last game. Seems like that would check all the boxes and it would allow kids to not have to make weird choices while their team is still playing.

I think a single transfer window would be excellent but, as mentioned earlier, Jan 2nd doesn't seem like a very good date.

Teams won't like it, because they are going to have plans A, B, and C at a position. If their respective windows are in reverse order, they have to decide on C before knowing whether they officially got A or B. I'm sure they'd have a handshake agreement or something, but they don't want to be counting on that, have the player change their mind, and then not have a backup plan.

I see your point. I just hate that some kids will be forced to make choices while their team is still playing in some cases.

I haven't seen the details on this proposal but in previous iterations there was a five-day extension after the last game for teams still playing. That would seem to be likely to continue.

Even at that, this year the semifinals are on January 8-9, so the window would still be open for a few days after that. So it would really only be the two teams in the championship game. But that's why it's likely they'll get a window after that game for those teams.
