I chose the portal because it's the worst of the choices. I really don't care if the players are getting paid or not. The top programs were paying players before, just under the table and others who either didn't have the boosters willing to do it or were trying to play by the rules got left behind. So, in a sense, NIL has helped college football. Is it out of hand? Yes, and it could be improved. Honestly, I think what NIL has done is exposed what was happening before with one hell of a huge spot light.

However, the portal is totally out of control and it is hurting the sport. Sure, people are watching the games. But, long term, this isn't sustainable....especially when you put it with what is happening in NIL.

The good part of all this is that, it seems that it has allowed other programs to rise up and be good. Look at teams like Indiana and TTech. So, I don't want to get rid of either one of those. (NIL and Portal). But, there has to be some rules and actually enforce the rules.

The out of control portal is allowing major tampering during the season. That's bad for the sport. You will never get rid of it completely, but I believe some major rules being put in place could help.

If we have a collective bargaining agreement, rules can be put in place that would actually help both the player and the programs. On January 1st, nobody had a clue what players were going to be on their team next year. That makes it extremely difficult for the coaches and it hurts fans becoming fans of the players. Right now, I really couldn't care less about any of the players. Sure, EJ was fun to watch. But, I'm nowhere close to a fan of his like I have been of players from the past. Why become a fan of a player when that player could very easily be playing for your rival next year?

Put in place rules that allows transfers, but limits the amount of transfering where a player is locked into a contract with a program. If they are being paid this amount of money, that is not unreasonable. And, both players and coaches should be under contract until the season is over, including postseason.

We can have NIL and transfers where it benefits the sport. But, that requires rules that must be followed and enforced.

What hurts is the NCAA. They are a clown show with no leadership or vision, and have been emasculated by the court system. It is time for the college Presidents, I think that is who the NCAA listens to, to come together with lawyers to fix the broken system. Fire the current leadership and start over. If need be have congress get involved and change the laws that are causing some of the problems. Yes, congress is a clown show too.

Coaches, their agents to some degree and AD's, helped to create this insane idea that it takes SOOOO much time to turn things around.

Now, before the portal and NIL, sure, it might have taken SOME time 3 years would be about right.

Now, that is all gone and the BS that coaches spew about how many hours they work and how bad things were and culture this and culture that, it is gone.

Part of the reason that Rhule needs to be gone is that I think he might just be too nice. He really seems to not only care for his players but also wants them to stick around, nothing wrong with that IF you are getting wins.

There is no reason to spend a lot of time actually recruiting HS kids anymore, now, you want to build relationships with them but you need to get older guys. Guys that understand college lifting, eating, classes, practices and so on. There is a huge difference between a 22 year old and a 19 year old.

Also, he needs to cut dead weight. It sucks and I would not be able to do it either, but that is what he needs to do.

Look at Saban at Bama. 4 years prior they struggled. Not like Indy, but were less than average. OU when Stoops took over. OU was struggling. Again, not like Indy. Devaney after Jennings. It can happen. Great coaches can win. The portal helped Cig. Built an older team. But dude has been coaching prior to Indy for years....And winning. Proven set system, identity he wanted. Brought 13 guys from JMU, 7 started, his staff had been together more than 10 years IIRC. Throw in his whole "production over potential", "one play at a time", "6 seconds if effort", "fast, physical, relentless".... Saw a psychologist talk about all of these mantras. Short, concise, and action verbs. Easy to remember, can visulaize what each is. Each is standard/identity/culture. He was and currently is a great coach. That's the Cig factor.

To the point, NIL or the portal is like the chicken or the egg. I think the portal with no more "sit a season" really hurt. Then getting paid for NIL and now revenue sharing. Those hurt college football. Cig just showed what a coach can do.

This is even a bigger chance to do major damage to college sports than anything listed here.

People can hate legislatures ... people can hate the executive branch ... but it is our judiciary which has done (and continues to do) the most damage. The other two branches of government have ceded control of this country to unaccountable anarchists who call themselves judges.
EVERY SINGLE JUDGE (especially the SCOTUS) should be up for re-election every 3 years.
We live in a nation where people who can't tell the difference between a boy and a girl call others "science deniers".
BTW, my high horse is named Pegasus.

In actuality I don’t think they do. NIL and Rev Share have allowed player payments to increase significantly over what they had under the table. Tax evasion and other laws are highly problematic for anyone trying to pay a player high 6 or 7 figures under the table. No one is carrying suitcases of $500k and electronic transfers are tracked. The days of paying a player 5 figures under the table doesn’t compare to what the players can get these days.
