1995 Nebraska vs. 2004 USC

When Herbie mentioned how the 01 Canes would stack the line with 9 in the box and 71' Nebraska wouln't be able to run the option against them.

Am I wrong but I didn't think NU ran that much option back then, in fact didn't NU lead the Big 8 in passing?

I wasn't even born then but I thought through my dad's required history class I read that somewhere
Yes..

The option was later..I'm thinking '76 or '78.

I remember talk of putting Johnny Rodgers at I-Back to get him more touches, but we stuck with Jeff Kinney at IB, and I think Bill Olds at FB.

In '71, I think Oklahoma was doing a little tripple option off the Wishbone (which I associated with Russia/Comunism for some reason) and later, T.O. started "Borrowing" some of it to fit the I-Formation.

A little hazy..I was 11 at the time.

Yes, the option came in the late 70's - early 80's. Gill in the early 80's was the first to really run it to perfection. Before him we had a string of pretty good passers (Serely, Faragamo, Humm, Tagge), and we did not run the option we became so famous for until much later than the `71 season. But then, that just goes to show what a dumb-a$$ Herbstreit is.

Oh, and by the way, the wishbone was not so much communistic. It was actually opperated by the Devil himself. Sure that son-of-a-b!^@h could coach, but he was the Devil none the less.

And yes T.O. has stated that one of the reasons he switched to the option was to be more competitive with OU (who was handing us our a$$ on a regular basis back then). However, just as he did with everything else, T.O. molded the option into a truly complex and sophisticated offense. Not the simple fake to the fullback and run around the corner of the wishbone. T.O.'s option was a thing of beauty. That is why it is so frustrating that people who are supposed to know about college football dismiss Osborne as a coach, and now they have the nerve to try to dismiss the `95 team as "one dimentional." Good lord...that team could run the counter, run traps, run options, pass to backs out of the backfield (the first NU touchdown in the `95 NC game was a pass to LP), pass to the tight ends, pass to the wide receivers, pass to the wingbacks, run reverses to the wingbacks, shovel passes to the running backs.......get my point. Oh hell, I don't know why I bother...you all understand...it is those morons on ESPN, ABC, and CBS that don't have a clue what Nebraska football was all about under Osborne. Particulary those incredible teams from 93-97. From 93-97 Nebraska played in four national championships and won three (we were so f-ing robbed of the fourth in the FSU game, but that is a topic for another post). Our record over that five year span was 60-3. SIXTY AND FREAKIN THREE!!! The guys who were freshmen in `94 played on three national title teams. How many USC players have Three national championship rings. I know Grant Wistrom has three.....Herbsteit you whiney little dumb-a$$ b%&ch!

I loved the fact that Barry Switzer said that if he was coaching college football today he would run the "Tom Osborne offense".

Pretty high praise in my book.

Much better than Herby asking, "did the 71 team pass the ball?"

i wish they would have shown more of Switzer's face when herbstreit was freaking out and saying that Nebraska wasnt that good.

i loved it when corso said something to the effect of "this guy won 3 national championships and won super bowls, and if he says that the 95 team is the best, im fine with it." i cant remember it exactly, sorry, im not even doing it justice.
