1995 team the most dominant EVER

IMO the option lacked the quick strike that many of today's offenses have.

While Im not going to agree or disagree, I think that NU has had its fair share of 60+ yard runs in the past 22-23 years with an option attack. And, they have piled up many of 50+ point beatings in that time too.

The WCO gives us the option to get down field in a hurry with one or two big pass plays.

Actually, the WCO is an offense that is a ball control offense, its not a vertical passing game, so to speak. It is important to get fast, game breaking WRs to stretch the field to open up the under-routes, or to take a 5 yd slant, break a tackle, and go 80.

It really doesnt matter, because a couple of people (on this board[stuckinChicago??]) have told me recently that billy c. doesnt run the WCO :blink: :blink: Thats news to me.

Weren't they up 35-7 at one point, then Wash St. made a push late.

Yeah, WSU had 2 late TDs against the second team, and if I remember correctly, NU still piled up like 500+ yards, and held them to around 300. WSU had like a 78yd TD run on their first play, yet ended up with like 60 yds rushing or something like that. NU fumbled the ball quite abit that game, most of them being right on the goal line as we were preparing for a TD, and I think that we had to kick 2 or 3 very short FGs. The game wasnt as close as the score idicated.

The defenses in the NFL are way too fast to even try to run the option, I remember Cordell Stewart's first year in the league w/ Pitt when they tried to run the option a few times and it wasn't pretty.

WSU had an 87 yard run and ended up with 72 total rushing yards.

I hope USC lose at least 1 game. Hopefully they end up like Miami in 02 and OU in 03. They were supposed to be the greatest teams ever but ended losing. The 95 NU team is the best ever by far.

The option isn't what made them great. If that were true, every team in the nation would run it.

more teams should run it imo. Passing=turnovers.

and the option/running the ball doesn't create turnovers?!

1999 Huskers ran the option, but TURNOVERS was what kept us from playing FSU in the champtionship that year.

or the 1996 game vs ASU per a recent thread. mistakes in running the option lead to several turnovers.

when the option is executed well, you can limit turnovers... gee, that sounds just like every offense, including the evil passing ones.

while I very much disagree with those that say the option no longer has a place in college football, our option offenses nonetheless, saw a major dropoff.

Like most systems, the option needs players and the right coaches to run it. and unfortunatly, we had too many missing pieces in the last few years.

that 1995 team though, simply had no weaknesses. not even two-deep on the depth chart.

I recall the sentiments in the newspapers after the Pacific game. NU only won by something like 70-21..? but that was a disapointment- the Huskers let up and went easy on 'em.

Honestly, I've always felt the 94 team was better simply because of they way they manhandled CU, who many people felt was the best team in several years from any school, and who also had a lot of magic working for it. Frazier was an awesome player, but that year we won with our 2nd and then 3rd string qb's leading the way the entire 2nd half of the season. Those guys could play ball. I'd have to call it a toss up, although most would disagree with me.

The 96 Fiesta Bowl (played in by the 95 team, just so there's no confusion) was fun to watch. IMO Spurrier should have seen then that his system wouldn't work in the NFL. Our defense had NFL like speed and Terrel Farley had a mismatch on every play. There was no way they could protect Wuerful(sp?). That team was indeed great.

No one truly runs the WCO anymore, including Callahan. It is just a snappy catch phrase that fans use to act like they know what they are talking about. In a true west coast offense, you pass the ball a vast majority of the time, and there is always a short read, and intermediate read, and a deep read, none of which are more than about 10 to 15 yards down the field. The only time receivers get any deeper than that is on a busted play. Modern offenses can be more accurately called a pro style offense, and is predicated on balance, and being able to do anything, anywhere, in any situation. You can run the ball 15 times in a row, or pass that much. You can throw seven 5 yard hitches in a row, or run verticles and have every receiver on the field steaking upfield. You can dominate on the ground or in the air. The west coast offense has been run since the 80's.
