Huskers Continue Alamo Bowl Workouts

Courtsey: NU Sports Information

LINCOLN – The Nebraska football team continued its bowl game preparations Saturday with a two-hour practice inside the Championship Indoor Center.

The Huskers were without 10 seniors who took part in commencement ceremonies Saturday, including defensive tackles Titus Adams and Le Kevin Smith, strong safety Daniel Bullocks, punter Sam Koch, offensive tackle Seppo Evwaraye, free safety Tyler Fisher, long snapper Jake Peetz, offensive guard Gary Pike, cornerback Joey Robison and wide receiver Mark LeFlore. LeFlore completed his undergraduate work in just three-and-a-half years.

Following practice, Head Coach Bill Callahan addressed his team’s status at the offensive tackle positions. NU started at least one freshman at one of the tackle spots during the final four regular season games due to injuries to starters Evwaraye and senior Cornealius Fuamatu-Thomas.

“We’ve been rotating a lot of players in practice with Chris (Patrick), Matt Slauson, Lydon Murtha and Seppo (Evwaraye),” Callahan said. “We’ve worked in a lot of players and getting them a lot of reps and experience, even flipping them to both sides of the line. They’re getting a lot of good exposure at those spots. We’ll put the best two tackles out there and we’ll decide that as we move along throughout the next week and a half.”

Callahan also commented on freshman Leon Jackson, who has been making the transition from safety to wide receiver during bowl preparations.

“We’re still working him a little on defense, but he’s made that transition on offense where he’s just getting acclimated to the system. He’s got the speed you look for in a wide receiver. He’s getting acquainted with everything that we’re trying to get accomplished, but it takes time. It takes time just to learn the plays and formations and how to plug himself into the system, but he’s winning. He certainly has the talent to play any of these positions.”

The Huskers continue workouts Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. practice.

NOTE: Nebraska Head Coach Bill Callahan announced on Saturday that senior defensive end Wali Muhammad and senior wide receiver Shamus McKoy have been suspended for the 2005 Alamo Bowl due to violation of team policies.

Yeah I can't imagine it being much worse then what le kevin did?? There was a dispute whether wali was getting a medical to come back. I take it he didn't get it.

WTH? What in gods name does that have to do with anything? What is that suppose to mean? Wali went ballistic and hit someone just because he didn't get an extra year? Dude..the things you come up with are just amazing.

No sorry Hunter, this is the first i heard of it. I have had the pleasure of hanging out with Wali a couple of times and the guy is the most level headed guy i know. The guy gets along with just about everyone so i doubt it had anything to do with losing his patience and hitting somoene.

ok, thanks nameless........i just find it kind of odd that 2 guys would get suspended this late and since the last season game......just like everyone else here, wondering what went wrong?

Sorry to hear those guys can't play. I want Michigan to smoke your team, but I honestly feel bad when guys can't actually play in the game. That's tough news for seniors especially.

I heard from an inside source this evening that both suspensions were drug related

at least they did not assault and rob someone, like the Texas players alledgedly did.....at least not that we are aware of.......thankfully cally has a hold of this program and it's intergrity, which is more than i can say for Mack Brown and Texas!

I have always tried to follow the "Innocent Until Proven Guilty" rule before casting judgement, and it looks like Calli is also. He didnt make any decisions with Smith until he got all of the facts.

So these guys must have been caught in the act of something. If it was drug related as previously stated I'm wondering if they came up hot on a random drug test?
