2006/2007 Director's Cup Standings

With all the new talk about the Big 12 possibly disbanded in the future, I have came to this conclusion. I would like to see the TV revenues split up similar to the Big Ten. This will help the other schools upgrade facilities which could lead to better athletes for the lower tier schools. I realize coaching in Football makes a big difference.

Here is the Director's Cup standings thru 6-12-07 for the Big 12:

Football (based on Cup placing)

#11 Oklahoma

#13 Texas

#26 Oklahoma State

#26(tie) Texas Tech

#41 Nebraska

#41(tie) Texas A&M

#41(tie) Missouri

Unranked: Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Baylor

(A minimum of five points will be awarded to any team that places 65th or lower)

Fall Overall

#6 Colorado

#11 Texas

#28 Oklahoma State

#34 Oklahoma

#37 Nebraska

#46 Texas Tech

#58 Texas A&M

#69 Missouri

#91 Iowa State

#122 Kansas

#124 Kansas State

#173 Baylor

Winter Overall

#10 Texas

#19 Nebraska

#21 Oklahoma

#24 Texas A&M

#26 Colorado

#46 Missouri

#51 Oklahoma State

#52 Texas Tech

#53 Iowa State

#67 Kansas

#84 Baylor

#125 Kansas State

Spring Overall

#13 Texas

#22 Texas A&M

#25 Oklahoma

#29 Nebraska

#37 Colorado (not bad for having no Baseball)

#40 Oklahoma State

#42 Baylor

#52 Texas Tech

#54 Missouri

#73 Iowa State

#82 Kansas

#153 Kansas State

Note: Some teams do not get points for some sports that other teams receive, such as Colorado and Iowa State which do not have Baseball teams. Similar: Nebraska gets points for Bowling where Stanford gets points for Fencing.

It seems that Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State are the schools that are not doing well, overall, in sports. If Colorado gets better in Football, they could win the Fall Sports Standings.

Now, what to do with Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State. If you realign the conference, the same problem will exist. If you drop teams such as Baylor and add a TCU, which is good in football, you tend to drop off in other sports because TCU, overall, is about the same or worse as Baylor. Sharing revenues will lead to better facilities, better players, and better coaches, especially in Football, Basketball, and Baseball where the TV revenues are much higher.

I think, better yet, any new Big 12 Commish should look into a Big 12 TV network that can carried on cable and dish. This way, Big 12 sports can be shown nationwide. This situation would bring the Big 12 back to prominance instead of losing ground to the likes of the Big East.

Here is a possible East/West Division setup(if divided down the middle):

West

Baylor

Colorado

Kansas State

Oklahoma

Texas

Texas Tech

East

Iowa State

Kansas

Missouri

Nebraska

Oklahoma State

Texas A&M

Two reasons why this will not work:

3-4 Non-Conference Games

5 Divisional Games

3 Conference Games

1) The Big 12, made up of the old Big 8 and Southwest Conferences, would never dissolve the traditional play between teams that have existed for soooo many years. Each team would have to play their divisional opponents at least once each year. They could play with other non-division teams 2 times in 4 years (home and away games). Potentially, Texas would not play Texas A&M for 7 years (2 games back-2-back against Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma State, then the following year, they play Texas A&M).

2) Travel time and expenses would suck up revenues gained from playing more North Division teams. An example would be: Texas A&M would have to play Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska every year instead of maybe once in 3-5 years.

2007 Football Games played against teams in BOLD

I think Steve Peterson is on the right track overall. I know the football team will get more points in 2007. A repeat for the Volleyball team and a increase of wins from the Mens's Basketball team will help. Don't count out the Baseball team. 2007/2008 is looking good.

For all people who do not like SP, I think he will move us into the Top 10 in the 2007/2008 season, but we will never beat Stanford who has too many sports athletes teams. However, this will allow for more infusion of donors. I wish we had a Boone Pickens from Oklahoma State. Maybe Warren Buffet needs to step up more than he has done.

You could keep those classic rivalries alive every year in a restructuring to East/West divisons by employing the system that the SEC currently uses. All teams in a particular divison are played every year, a classic "rival" from the other divison (ex. Georgia-Auburn or Tennessee-Alabama) is also played every year with the other two non-divisiona teamsl rotating on a yearly basis so a new non-divison rival is played every year. I don't endorse this system for the big 12, but merely mention it as a possibility.
