2014 Sand VB Season

The Nebraska sand volleyball team opened competition at the Jack In the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge at Queens Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday. A total of 24 tandems from Hawaii, Arizona, Hawaii Pacific, Nebraska and USC competed in eight different pools to determine seeding for Saturday's single-elimination brackets.
The Husker pairs went a combined 4-6 on the day, with four of NU’s five teams advancing to Saturday’s 16-team Gold Bracket. All four teams also earned their first victories of the 2014 sand season.

Nebraska’s No. 1 pair of Melanie Keil and Justine Wong-Orantes went 1-1 on the day. They earned a victory over Sara Seiber and Rachel Rhoades of Arizona in a 21-16, 21-13 win in Pool C. NU’s No. 2 squad of Amber Rolfzen and Kadie Rolfzen also went 1-1 on the day, defeating Christiana Furrer and Kasey Thompson of Hawaii Pacific 21-10, 21-9 in Pool G. The Huskers’ No. 3 squad of Cecilia Hall and Alexa Ethridge posted a 1-1 record, with a win over Jamie Asuncion and Haley Doerfler of Hawaii Pacific 21-13, 21-10 in Pool F. The Huskers’ No. 5 pair of Mary Pollmiller and Kelsey Fien also advanced with a 1-1 record. The team defeated Karlee Riggs and Hannah Rooks of Hawaii 21-11, 21-18 in Pool A.

The third-place teams in each pool are relegated to tomorrow's Silver Bracket. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with single-elimination play in both the Gold and Silver brackets. First serve will be at 2 p.m. at Queen's Beach.

Melanie Keil started only five matches for the Nebraska indoor volleyball team as a freshman, but has now earned a spot on the Huskers’ No. 1 pair for the sand volleyball season.
Nebraska lost three of its top four sand players from last season. Keil has been paired with freshman Justine Wong-Orantes during the sand season. Her blocking and quick attacks at the net complement Wong-Orantes, who plays great defense and places shots all over the court.

Keil and Wong-Orantes helped the Huskers to their first dual win of the season Wednesday, as Nebraska beat Arizona State 3-2 in Tempe, Ariz.

The dual came down to the final set of the final match. Keil and Wong-Orantes rallied to win the last two sets for a 16-21, 21-17, 15-11 victory against Bianca Arellano and Bethany Jorgensen.

Nebraska assistant coach Dan Meske said Keil has been the surprise of the sand season. Wong-Orantes needs to play with a player who can block all the time, and Keil has filled that role.

The Nebraska sand volleyball team earned its second dual win of the season on Thursday as the Huskers defeated Grand Canyon 3-2.
Coming down to a deciding third set, the 2-1 (24-26, 22-20, 15-8) victory by Alexa Ethridge and Cecilia Hall over Chloe Jenkins and Kami Dickerson proved to help seal the win for NU.

Alicia Ostrander and Brenna Lyles defeated Kaitlynn Ausmus and Alex Goodmann 2-0 (21-8, 21-13), while Mary Pollmiller and Kelsey Fien tallied a 2-0 (21-12, 21-9) win over Brandy Grant and Britta Forsythe.

Grand Canyon’s No. 1 pair of Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallman defeated Justine Wong-Orantes and Melanie Keil in two sets (23-21, 21-18). The Lopes’ No. 2 squad of Shannond Dugan and Megan Glennie topped Amber Rolfzen and Kira Larson in three sets (17-21, 21-17, 15-7).

Nebraska will face Arizona tomorrow in Phoenix at 3 p.m., before opening the Grand Canyon Pairs Tournament at 6 p.m.

The Nebraska sand volleyball team closed the Grand Canyon Sand Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday.
Nebraska’s No. 3 pair of Brenna Lyles and Alicia Ostrander advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, but fell to Arizona’s No. 2 pair of Madie Kingdon and Jane Croson in two sets (21-15, 21-15). Lyles and Ostrander had defeated Nebraska’s No. 1 pair of Amber Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes 2-1 (12-21, 21-19, 16-14) to advance to the semifinals.

The Huskers’ No. 2 duo of Kelsey Fien and Mary Pollmiller dropped a 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 22-20) decision to Grand Canyon’s No. 2 pair of Shannon Dugan and Megan Glennie in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation rounds, NU’s fifth-ranked pair of Kira Larson and Melanie Keil defeated Grand Canyon’s No. 3 pair of Kami Dickerson and Chloe Jenkins 2-0 (21-14, 21-17). At the No. 4 spot, Alexa Ethridge and Cecilia Hall beat Arizona’s No. 5 duo of Emily Kiser and Allie Cook 2-0 (2-23, 22-20).

Saturday’s matches concluded the Huskers’ sand volleyball season as they will now turn their attention to the spring exhibition season.
