So far this season, Nebraska has done a solid job in neutralizing opponents' rushing attack, but then again aside from Taysom Hill, Nebraska hasn't faced a significant rushing threat. Joseph Yearby is a significant running threat, but he's operating behind a completely re-tooled offensive line that hasn't really faced a defensive line as athletic and physical as Nebraska's. Nebraska finally gets to see what its linebacking group looks like when all three starters are on the field, which will be huge as one of them is going to asked to keep an eye on Yearby coming out of the backfield. MRI, Bando, and Dedrick have all shown flashes of solid play through two games this year, which makes me confident that we'll be able to contain Yearby today.
Where I'm nervous, and where we're all understandably nervous is the matchup between Brad Kaaya and our secondary. It is safe to say that Daniel Davie had a rough game against South Alabama, but if we're going to be fair, about half of the deep balls that his WR caught were pretty well-thrown passes, and even the elitist of CBs struggle to defend those. Nevertheless, Kaaya is a good QB and will undoubtedly place some pretty perfect passes to his WRs. They're going to try and pick on Davie with the deep pass and I hope that, when they do, we have some safety help over the top. Our coaches are smart and I have confidence that they've remedied this problem. Not completely, but coverage today will be better than it was last week. If we're able to generate a pass rush, then all the better.
Offensively, I don't see us struggling. If Miami commits to that same defensive scheme that they used in Lincoln last year, we might not even need our defense to step up and make a vital stop on every Miami possession. I think the passing game will continue to click, and we'll see a solid day on the ground from Newby.
