2015 Opponent Previews: South Alabama

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
SBNation: The hard part's over. Now here comes the hard part.
Ten years ago, Ladd Peebles Stadium was the home of the Senior Bowl, a young bowl game, and some concerts. That's not a bad lot in life, certainly. Built in the late-1940s, the stadium had hosted plenty of college football games -- one Alabama game per year in the 1950s and 1960s, some Auburn games, some Southern Miss games -- and was outfitted with new field turf in 2004. It just didn't have a home team.

Seven years ago, the University of South Alabama decided to give it one. It added football, hired Mobile native, former Bama receiver, and Birmingham-Southern head coach Joey Jones, and started building the Jaguars.

USA beat Hargrave Military Academy in its first organized game in 2009, won 17 games as basically an unclassified program over the next two years, then went 6-4 in 2011 as an FCS independent. The Jaguars beat their first established FBS program, Florida Atlantic, in double overtime during a 2-11 campaign in 2012, then rode a feisty defense to 6-6 in 2013. They were not selected for a bowl that year, but after a second straight 6-6 campaign, they became the youngest program to go bowling when they accepted an invitation to the inaugural Camellia Bowl in Montgomery.

Is there any reason we should not hammer this team?

The only reason we shouldn't hammer this team is if half our starters get the flu before the game.......and if the Crimson Tide sneak in wearing Jag uniforms and play the game for them.

NU was extremely fortunate thanks to Ameer Abdullah to win against McNeese State last year

No game is a gimmie anymore with this team

Riley and Co have lost some real mind benders to tiny schools in pre season in the recent past

Holy crap, do you expect us to win any games?

These are the real facts:

NU needed a miracle play at the very end of the McNeese State game last year to win the game

NU was favored by 28 points in that game:

http://www.huskermax.com/games/2014/files/02mcneese_predict14.html

It took this once in a decade miracle play from 50+ with 40 seconds left to beat this 1AA team:

Oregon States coaching staff- now ours, in the last 4 years has lost in pre season to:

Cal State Sacramento

Eastern Washington

Those teams and McNeese have just 63 scholarships

and our coaching staff lost 6 of their last 7 games

The inconvenient facts are in this era of Nebraska football and until this coaching staff proves themselves here at NU- there are no gimmie games

This team and these coaches regularly lose to teams most would consider to be inferior

Im predicting 7-9 wins- but every game is in play with this team and this coaching staff- no gimmies

It's South Alabama. Nebraska wins this game handily. This isn't Bo Pelini's team anymore. I don't care if Riley struggled with a couple of puffs at BFE Oregon State, be has a team with a pulse now.

Ok

This team struggled mightily against a McNeese team- an NU team with a "pulse"- minus the guy who won them the game in a miracle play at the gun

THis one is in the bag because of a coaching staff who showed it lost to teams like this with regularity in the past- got it, bet the farm

If South Alabama beats Nebraska I will personally hold a sign on O Street that says "I am jmfb's beyotch".

Im guessing there were guys thinking along those same lines when McNeese State took NU to the wire last year or when Cal State Sacramento and Eastern Washington beat Rileys Oregon State teams recently, all 1AA teams

Thats the era we are living in-no game is a gimmie

Its not 1997 anymore
