Maybe he's just plain bad and was a little lucky at OSU with his good seasons.

He either is a quality coach who didn't work out in this specific context for whatever reason(s), or he is a bad coach who somehow convinced almost everyone, including the administrations at Alabama and USC, and the San Diego Chargers, that he was much better than he was.

Or it's somewhere in the middle and some combo of the two.

Ahhh yes...the mythical USC and Bama offers.  I think those offers happened in the basement of a hotel right before a big game.
