We play something called "Southeastern" in November of 2021? Are we moving to the SEC?
Southeastern Louisiana is on the schedule in November 2021.  What the SEC does makes perfect sense, basically a rest week for much of the team in the brutal part of the schedule.  Playing the last 5 in a row like we do in 2020 is doing no one any favors, and since the conference sets that, the only way to break it up is a game like this in October/November. You know what makes more sense? An actual bye week.

An extra bye week makes sense for teams (like NU currently) that are sort of on the fringe of being competitive with the top third of the teams on the schedule.  Our chance to win games vs top third tier teams rests heavily on our having full strength roster availability (no injured starters etc) at the time we play the games.

Additional prep time is also beneficial of course.  With current Big Ten strength as a group, relatively speaking, and an extra conference game compared to the SEC (the perceived strongest conference), each Big Ten team has a slightly more challenging road anyway.

NU needs the cash of home games very much, but the long term revenue prospects may be better by gaining ground on programs ahead of them.  Foregoing a game to improve chances vs better foes later might pay off.   Of course, NU needs wins wherever possible so it may be wiser to view a conference loss to a top tier opponent more sacrificial than foregoing a win.

This would be an.....extra one. Get it?  Play 2 decent non conference games,  have a normal bye week,  but break up the conference grind with one of these and let the backups and redshirts get playing time.

Or, have a bye, rest the entire team, stave off any potential injuries, and get better on the practice field rather than playing Directional State in a game that benefits virtually no one.

There should be two bye weeks in the schedule anyways.

Well if 2 bye weeks is an option then sure.  I'd still say any game experience is beneficial for depth still.
