So, if we would end up with Johnson, Crawford, Evans-Jenkins and Roberts (all players we have a decent chance with), we would end up with the 45th rated class with 14 players.

Purdue 35 = 20 players

Illinois 42 = 22 players

Minnesota 39 = 19 players

Iowa 44 = 12 players

Northwestern 46 = 15 players

Wisconsin 48 = 13 players

It appears we didn't at least lose ground talent wise in the west.  Now, if the new staff changes can bring in some good portal guys and turn our win/loss record around next year, we can go back to out recruiting these teams....and hopefully the results on the field show it.

I thought I saw somewhere we are not out of it with Citizen. Does he belong on the list?

Not trying to make excuses, because it's underwhelming.

But this illustrates some of the points.

  • We have the fewest signees in the conference.  Most schools have at least 50% more if not double.  That makes it impossible to compete in the rankings.
  • Illinois is 16 spots ahead of us.  But their top-ranked recruit is #631, which is a long ways down the list.  But when only one school has more signees than you, you help your ranking.
  • 13 schools ahead of us (in the country) have a lower average ranking.  Again, small numbers hurt.
  • We are currently #57 in the 247 Composite in total points.  Our average ranking of 86.19.  Only 21 have an average rating over 87.99.  There are a ton of schools that the average ranking is 86-87.  So the remaining 36 classes are all but indistinguishable (other than number of commits).

That's probably true to some extent.

But I think it's much more about the Big Ten Network and $$$$$.

Yep. Bottom and middle teams started getting way better as soon as they started getting $50+ mil a year from the massive tv contracts.

Seems we are saving a lot of spots for the portal. So no. It’s not terrible/not the best.
Of the guys we have added I am pretty darn impressed. The punter and Hill are homeruns, the kicker seems serviceable, jury is out on Williams.

Now that being said we have a lot of holes left to fill.

I find myself not near as excited for incoming freshman as I once was. I know this is obvious, but, especially in our precarious situation right now, I find a lot more hope for immediate contributions in that damn portal. Guys that have cut their teeth and shaken out where they shake out.  So many misses and bail outs with the 18 year olds.. If we can get some above average to good 21 year olds, they seem to bring a lot more hope to viability.. I know ultimately we will still need to caress the overinflated egos of the high school all star warriors, but damn, its nice to get the already humbled versions sometimes.
