2024 Fall Camp Notes - Offensive Line

Speaking of redemption stories, can you imagine if our 2024 starting tackles were Corcoran and Benhart and they were both solid? Unimaginable at the end of 2022.

I thought Teddy was decent last year, so if Corcoran can beat him out he will have earned it. And to his credit, sounds like he is a terrific locker room guy. Would love for him to have a good final year, but it would take a several good games before I stop getting nervous just seeing him on the field. Benhart made it happen though, so there's hope!
It's why we need to get back to having a good enough line that younger guys can come in and develop before they are thrown into the fire on Saturday.  Let's say Benhart never played much until last year, we all would have a very different view of his playing ability because we never saw him struggling as an underclassman.  Hopefully, that's the case with Corcoran.

OL groupings tonight were (LT to RT):

First team: Corcoran-Evans-Scott-Mazzccua-Benhart

Second team: Prochazka-Maciejczak-Sledge-Knaak-Gottula

Third team: Seagren-Taumua-Mancino-Pyle-Brix

My observations:

Solid first group with Prochazka and Lutovsky (when healthy) probably still in the mix

Maciejczak has moved up the list quickly after starting out as a defensive recruit

Gottula at RT is interesting but it might be because Prochazka is at LT.  I've heard the most good things about him among the young guys.

Knaak was recruited as a tackle but at guard now.  Being on the second team is at least promising for his potential to contribute.

Brix at RT might be the middle ground (it was brought on the board that there were questions about him being a tackle in college).

I think it's been said Knaak is working both & they seem to be cultivating max versatility among their best lineman.  Brix certainly has the athleticism to play tackle, but he'd never executed a kick step in a game.  So, it's really more about his ability to develop or demonstrate the skill set to play OT imo.  FWIW, I recall seeing Prochazka's HS film, and while his team passed, his pass sets were beyond rudimentary, and he lacked a kick set as well.

So you actually went or is this just from twitter and if you went, how was it overall?  Not the practice part so much but the vibe/atmosphere?

With all due respect to injuries and the physical style of Big Ten football, plus a long season, I think we appear to have a pretty good group of 7 guys on the line as @Mavric mentioned above.

Wondering who gone be the 8th and 9th linemen.   Guessing it's Gottula and Maciejczak, if I had to place a bet.

I like this oline group/committee.

Question the tackles, more LT than RT, due to previous poor performances, but Benhart was OK last year. Hopefully his trajectory keeps going up.

BB showed a lot of improvement last year.  He's going to be 24-ish.  I think he believes he can be better.  And I agree with whoever said that Benhart and Corc played early because of the situation but really needed a few years to grow, learn and mature before seeing the Playing Field.

I'm with @Decked and don't think Cork should be LT.  I do think he will be capable down the road to help out in spots with the line though.  I also think he's had enough starting snaps and should just be a filler on the line if need be, while providing good vibes to the other lineman.

I wasn't too impressed with Teddy last year, and saw a timid guy playing not to get hurt.  Hoping he is all healthy and can just go be a real tough dog pass protecting and improved with running plays.  Time will tell.

Maciejczak at #2 surprised me. Granted that is probably due to Luto being out. Pretty good considering he only has had the spring I believe since moving over from DL/being hurt. Seems we will have some great depth at center. Gottula seems to be a capable backup.

Is Brock Knutson working at OT?
