2024 Fall Camp Notes - Quarterbacks

I don’t think you’re wrong.

But having better passing will make the run blocking easier, and running for 5 yards instead of 3 will make the pass blocking easier because targets should get open more easily, so they won’t have to protect as long.

The OL is extremely important but a good QB can also make them look better. That said Martinez was obviously a good QB seeing as he did very well when he left our OL.
To add, a QB having wide out and catching options who are 6'3 and above vs the under 6 foot gang frosty kept bringing in should pay immense dividends to multiple positional groups

Thank the husker high heavens that the season starts in 9 days because this board needs some actual games to chat about instead of filling the abyss of a 9 month offseason with pointless debates back and forth.

I like how some posters on here discredit Kaelin without seeing the kid throw a pass, ever.  I also like how posters on here like to act like we've never had to go to a backup qb when in reality, this progrum hasnt gone thru a season unscathed at QB since early Tommy Armstrong days and Zac lee before him.

TL/DR: Raiola is special, not surprised he won the job.  We're going to need Kaelin sooner than we realize. HH a nice 3rd option but I never want to see him take a snap for us again unless its a clear running design play.  GBR, season is so close, thank god
You can @ me if you are going to talk about me you know  ;)

I never said anything about the team never needing a backup QB first of all, and was simply talking about wanting more blue chip QBs in here after Raiola.  I also have seen him throw plenty of passes in HS, and we were specifically talking about his HS rating.  IMO he will be a solid backup, but isn't going to push us to the playoffs etc like we are all hoping from Raiola.  I am entitled to my opinion, so are you.  I also could be horribly wrong, and I would own that gladly.

All that said, fully agree about wanting to get the games here.  That is why we are hashing out whatever we can to fill the time here on the message board where people do that sort of thing.

lol, i had no intent of targeting my post to you at all, believe me, im not shy to quote and go after a post i vehemently disagree with ;) .  I did just a quick scroll on the forum as I was stuck in an airport waiting for a flight to board

Perfectly fine ranking for a true freshman that hasn't played yet.  But, I suspect he will be higher up this list at the end of the year.

Iowa.... :laughpound

Just from a quick glance at the stats, he was at Miami previously, putting up mid-tier numbers. Unless Miami was starved for WRs or something, that one doesn't make much sense.

He was the ACC freshman of the year, then regressed the past couple  seasons - to the point of being benched for a game. People here seem to be really focused on his first year and convinced that Longo will get him back to that form. Supposedly slimmed down and more of a threat in the run game like he was as a freshman, but I'm skeptical as well. If his ranking is based on volume of production I don't understand how he's so much higher than Howard, Rogers, and Rourke.

Yeah, I noticed his first year numbers looked alright. Can you think of any guys who regressed for two years but then had a return to form as a senior?

TVD had a ESPN QBR of 71.0 last year, good for 31st in the country.  He was right behind Lil Tua (72.9), Drew Allar (72.7), and Riley Leonard (72.1) and right infront of Joe Milton (70.1), so pretty solid company.

I'd direct your ire at Will Rogers who had a 47.1 QBR last year, good for 94th in the country.

Rogers gets dinged pretty heavily by QBR  because he does not run at all (although Van Dyke isn't a positive there either), and the Mississippi State offense having a lot of short passes (low YPA). Recognizing that Rogers had the benefit of playing for an offensive genius and his efficiency dropped way down post-Leach, he still put up some impressive numbers in the SEC.

Van Dyke has had the best season of any of the non-Gabriel QBs, but it was a long time ago and in the ACC. So I have no idea - Drew Allar also had a year that was phenomenal stat-wise (25/2 TD/INT ratio, 73.7 QBR), but that was the worst high-ranking offense I have ever seen and he had 5 games with sub-50% completion percentages. They got #1 right, and the more I look at the rest of them the more I'm convinced there are no right answers. They should probably have Howard higher just because he's going to have impressive numbers with the talent around him, not because I think he's that good.

I'm pretty convinced Longo and his air raid are going to be a complete failure at Wisconsin. Fickell will be on the hot seat in 25/26.
