2025-2026 Portal Updates

I think you did well to relate Hoiberg to a coaching situation where the guy sucked at fist and then turned it around.

But I also think coaching basketball is just so much different than football. Basketball has a roster size of like 15 dudes, which is almost as many as a defensive line coach has in his room.

Hoiberg definitely kept pounding the concrete for recruits, though. If you look at composite class rankings he’s practically recruiting higher nationally than the football team when you take into account that there are like 350ish division 1 basketball schools.

Basically what I’m saying is: check the 2025 football portal updates thread for info on the men’s basketball team. 😁
Basketball has had players constantly changing teams longer than football and 2-3 good players can make a huge difference in BB. So, it should have been able to be done easier than turning around a roster of 150 and a huge staff.

Interesting thoughts. But there aren't really a lot more basketball schools competing for the top recruits than there are football teams. Basically the Big East and maybe a few more. A lot of those 350 aren't much different than the FCS in football.

I think the “most successful” bball teams in the next 5-7yrs will be teams that have a core of 3-5 floor players and 1 maybe 2 portal guys. Most of the blue bloods in bball will get their 1 and-and-done super high profile players and maybe 2 one-and-done per recruiting season. PLUS several guys that stay 3-4yrr that are really good. Hoiberg has done well. I commend his approach. And I’m glad that’s our bball approach.

Having said that, it realllly sucks in fball we don’t get the players from Nebraska who are willing to wait 2-3 yrs to play on the OL specifically but generally players who want to play for the Big Red. They go away or don’t even know the glory they could have from our past.
Hell, it’s been since 2001 since Miami did us up in the natty. Yes, several yrs w Bo were good and tries at the Conference Championship in the B12 and B1G and the 2014 win against the Miami foe. Biggest comeback against tOSU a few yrs later… But even those tries were over 10yrs ago.
We don’t have any patience and don’t run that type of offense anymore.
Now we are buying OL (hopefully spending big since our 5* QB left us with money to spend), a couple “maybe” WR types, damn sure need a RB, and some top flight EDGE players.

As I ponder our future…and sadly, our diminishing Namesake…coupled with our totally crappy record of putting football players whom have the ability to have an NFL career in the draft……..

We have to completely BUY a team. We have to have players. Bye bye Dylan, and the rest that will leave.
Welcome to and hello to the ones that want to stay and continue the rebuild. Welcome to the ones that can play right away, or maybe next year. Stay here, build it and become legend. But methinks sadly…gone are the days.

We have become, and have been a destination of really high expectations with very low results. Whether it be by coaches, wins, NFL players, even a chance at a Conference Championship, or CFP appearance, total win/loss, an upset on national tv, a top 25 win, etc in the W column. We are not good at football anymore.

The best we have had is Emmett Johnson as an All-American…and a 5* star QB recruit (that never delivered) to very middling results the last 5-8yrs. Overall we going on about 10 yrs of suck. Not to mention the whole entirety of the last 18-19yrs overall.

The purgatory that we have been in will continue with next seasons buzz saw schedule.

Unless these new hires can get some payers and actually coach them, I don’t see a 10-11 win season in our future for at least until….

at some point, without giving in to defeat, we must realize who we are…..we are the beatable team on everyone else’s schedule. We are the ones who get our noses rubbed on the carpet for our past crap….

does nebraska go after a new starter at QB or do we look for someone to be depth for next year? or do we wait and see what happens in the bowl before deciding that?

New starter as well as another for depth IMO. Unless TJ or Marcos make a jump this spring, we're going to need a go to guy for the fall. With TJ's recent injury history and the unknown factor with Davila, we will need another QB option or two.

I think you try and find a starter that is looking to play one year because eligibility is up or go to NFL after that year. Then TJ is hopefully ready for his year three and the 2027 kid is truly special for after. Ideally that’s how it would work but since is NU it most likely won’t :).

if we look for a new starter....i think TJ might just leave also. he has to be thinking right now this is his job. and no idea what davila might be thinking about the whole situation.

There is no more "waiting a year for the kid to be ready", they will not stay in the majority of cases until year 3. Either give TJ the job or you have to find someone else.
