I'm confused, what is this opening night of? They don't start practice that soon do they?
Yes, I believe that's when practice starts. Or right close to that anyway.

Practice starts 6 weeks before the first game, so it will start on the 22nd. They are allowed to have limited practice right now. I think it's something in the 5 hours per week range now with some limits on number of players allowed to be together when the coaches are there. Most teams do position groups most of the week. Starting the 22nd they will be able to have 20 hours of practice with the full team.
At least that's the way it was until the House settlement, but it may have changed - I haven't looked into it.
