2025 College Football Playoff Rankings

As far as I understand, not guaranteed, no. The field is the top 5 highest ranked conference champions, plus 7 at large teams (next 7 highest ranked).
Since there are only 4 power conferences and there are 5 guaranteed spots for conference champions, that guarantees at least one Group of Five teams will get into the playoff.

I believe you are correct... but that has no bearing on the original point made. The vast majority of the group of 5 games have absolutely no iota of meaning to the college football landscape outside of their respective fan bases. Currently Tulane is the highest ranked in that group. They play Charlotte this week, who just got beat by 30 against Georgia... can't wait to see that game. They also have already lost badly twice this year and they are still the best that group of teams has to offer- Ole Miss 45- Tulane 10 and UTSA 48- Tulane 26.

There is a fun scenario still in play this year that 2 G5 teams could be ranked higher than the ACC champ which would leave them out of the playoff completely. Unlikely, but would be awesome.

That wasn't my original point. I was responding to the claim that because there are 13 games this weekend that matter for the playoff that's evidence that the playoffs aren't ruining the regular season. My point was that isn't evidence in support of that stance. I don't think it supports either way.
