McCallister went into the portal because Ekeler plans to rugby-style punt, as he did at Tennessee. McCallister left Washington because they were making the same change.
Sure, but kickers in the NFL actually joke about it being the "merry-go-round," of jobs. Basically, you go to a team, kick a bit, mess up once or twice, team cuts you, you go into the merry go round, some other team plucks you up, you kick there for a bit until you mess up, back to the merry go round. Eventually you do bad enough nobody picks you up and you're done. In the era of "big leagues," mercenary pay for play NCAA players, it's not shocking when these guys are forced to get used to the "big league lifestyle," a few years earlier.Kind of feel bad for McCallister. He commits in December when it looks like we're going to run a traditional punt package, then Ekeler is hired in February and intends to run his rugby-style package.
Made sense for him to come here. Makes sense for him to leave. Turns out it was all just a hassle for the guy.
