3-5 yrs

A lot will depend on if we have a QB who is ready to run Frost’s offense. If so, we are not that far off. We hung with Wisc for 3 quarters. I think we will see a stark improvement in accountability and conditioning which will have use competing for the West very soon. We addressed some major holes on defense with JUCOs (really needed a LB who can fill holes and sniff out the ball and a S who is a ball hawk and we got both). We also picked up a stud RB and a playmaker in the slot from the JUCO ranks. Biggest question mark we have will be O-line. If we see improvement on the Oline and if we have a QB who is READY to run Frost’s offense we should compete for the West in year 1.

This is where I think a lot of Husker fan's views are skewed.  Just because UCF had a better season, doesn't mean they had more talent.  Talent isn't readily seen when a team is poorly coached.

Meaning, I firmly believe that a Nebraska team coached by Frost this year would beat a UCF team coached by Frost.

Agreed completely.  It wasn't even just a matter of being well coached, it goes to all of the positions being on the same page and having the understanding of what we are doing as a team.   

Last year, just having Bryant healthy would have made a huge difference, not because he is so much better than ozigbo or Wilbon,  but because he could read gaps on the fly.   Next year it won't be anywhere near as important because the gaps will be known going into the play allowing all of the backs to go full speed from the snap.   We have far more talent than UCF did, but they had an understanding of what they were doing and went at it at a much faster pace.  There will be a premium on frosts ability to call designed plays for at least the first half of the season next year but that will transition to qb reads as the season goes on and the RPO will be more prevalent.   As time goes by, we will be able to expand our blocking schemes and complicate the offense even more.  It may not look a whole lot different from game 1 to game 8, but it will be, and that will put added pressure on defenses to play sound ball and be able to beat people in 1 on 1 action.   

To go a step further, the narrative of having a great qb talent is fun but it won't really matter as much in the scheme of things because the rest of the players around him will have to have that level of understanding of the game.   Martinez could come in and know the offense top to bottom but it won't make much difference until the line understands it as well.   IMO, he, POB, and Gebbia will probably all be pretty comparable in the system until the rest of the offense catches up and then the athleticism and understanding will separate the 3.

Agree, he will get more out of the players we currently have but another big jump will happen when we actually have some success on the field. It will become easier to get better players and the cycle sort of perpetuates itself. It will still take some time before we are operating at the level Bama is and we may never reach their overall talent level but it can grow into manageable territory with some better coaching (which I believe we now have) and when we start performing on the field it will make us look better to a higher talent pool.

I think we do have talented players here already.  The previous staff did a poor job of motivating these kids to play the game to the level they are capable of.

 
Last night they went on an on about the Freshmen.  Freshmen RBs, QBs, WRs, linemen.  For Georgia, From is a true Freshman, Ridley is a true freshman.  For Alabama, a true freshman QB threw the game winning TD to a freshman wide receiver in OT.

Winning on the field will hopefully bring in some wins in the recruiting phase so we can get more impact players like Spielman who played to very the last snap of the season.  It will take winning just enough at first to sell recruits and climb up the recruiting class ranking, until like Ohio State or Alabama we can toss in a true freshman due to injury or lack of performance and put winning a championship on their shoulders.

 
I think our problems the last 3 years have been a management problem, on and off the field.  I think this team has plenty of talent and potential to at least be in contention for a division if not conference championship sooner rather than later.  With the anticipated massive upgrade in staff personnel and desire to win games, we will see exactly that.  I put the time table at being in a conference title game at 2 years, winning it 4 years.

Those putting a playoff berth at 6 or more years must be forgetting that all you really have to do is win the conference to have a legitimate shot at a berth.  This year doesn't really prove this otherwise.  A 1 loss B1G champion Nebraska isn't getting left out anytime soon, everyone knows the type of viewership our participation would generate.

I see us being competitive this year, not next year or a few years down the road, and winning the West in another year.

Alabama got me thinking about this. Their quarterbacks were highly competent game managers and proven leaders that Saban could plug into the system, but they weren't exactly superstars themselves, and none of them seemed NFL worthy. 

Then Saban decides he might not win with Jalen Hurts —  the two year starter with the 152 QB rating — and dumps him cold at halftime for a flashier freshman. 

Alabama might have won either way, but it's hard to underestimate the singular value of a great QB.

As a San Franciso 49ers fan, I can tell you that me and every Niner fan I know agreed with everything you stated above. Then we got Jimmy Garappolo, and suddenly every lowly player on a below mediocre team started playing out of his head as the Niners went 5-0.

I think this is what a lot of us are hoping for.  

There is is some precedent for that.  In 2007 you’d be hard pressed to find a worse defense than Nebraska’s in all of college football. 2 years and a new coach later, you’d be hard pressed to find a better defense than Nebraska’s in all of college football. 

 
I think we'll be highly competitive quickly under Frost, meaning by year 2 or 3. Frost is going to turn the roster over pretty quickly and get more out of the guys that are already on campus.

I doubt we'll ever have the roster that Alabama has 1-85. They've had the #1 recruiting class for 7 straight years. I don't see us doing that but we can compete with anybody with great coaching, top level development, and good recruiting.

That is what we all hope, but I am not sure people realize how rare and special those two coaches are.  It is nice to see the off season enthusiasm, but lets keep it real for now.

Well, I think that particular example had a lot more to do with a guy named Suh than it did with anyone named Pelini. But I agree with the premise that the right coach can effect a huge change in fairly short order and I believe we finally have the right coach. Only took 20 years....
