"30" defense

Eric the Red

Team HuskerBoard
With linebackers Corey McKeon and Steve Octavien sidelined with injuries, Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove inserted Culbert in the Huskers’ “30” defense. He was a hybrid linebacker, playing in the middle of an alignment that featured three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs.
Nebraska didn’t use the formation the entire game, but it did work in certain situations, as the Huskers defeated Missouri 34-20 at Memorial Stadium. Coaches had worked with Culbert in practice in NU’s nickel package, with hopes Culbert could flush quarterback Chase Daniel out of the pocket and pressure him.

Daniel completed 20 of 38 passes for 244 yards. He gained only 13 yards on nine carries.

“He’s a kid that he’ll run wherever you tell him to, and he makes plays,” senior safety Andrew Shanle said of Culbert. “He’s a big tackler, and he has a lot of energy out there. He’s just a strong, physical freshman. He really got to shine today.”

That will work in obvious passing situations, but I don't see it working too well when they bring in the 300 lb I-back against a 3-man front. It should help defend the option and contain McGhee.

I think we DON'T see much of this defense against A&M. The Aggies are not a great pass team, they lead the nation in TOP. If we have 5 DBs, with Culbert as an LB, the Aggies will run the ball down our throats. It was a perfect defense for a team like Mizzou, but not A&M.

This is why McKeon and Octavien were held out - to get ready for a very physical Aggie team.

In conference a&m has been averaging 194 yards in the air and 220 on the ground. Holding out Octavien and McKeon was probably a very good idea. It makes me wonder if Coz is planning to use Major as a defensive back or an outside linebacker? Either way it was a good defensive scheme by Coz.

I don't think that we will see this "30" defense against aTm but we could see a different type of defense. Possibly a 4-4 type look with Culbert being that extra linebacker to come up and seal the outside runs. He could also come in very handy trying to cover Bennet, their tight end. This would allow McKeon, Bradley, and Rudd to worry about the middle runs just a little bit longer. Another thing we could do is line the front four up a little differently, maybe a step or two inside of where they normally would line up to shut down the running lanes of Lane, and Lewis. But by doing that we would have to spread out the linebackers a little more in fear of the outside run plays.

I'm picturing Grixby trying to tackle that big RB. He wraps him up, and the big guy makes a 40-yard TD with Grixby holding onto him the whole way. Ouch!!!

If he's the guy to get a shot at him on a play, just pray he holds him long enough for others to swarm to him.

If he is hanging around Lane's shoulders, then he should never play again. If we are successfully going to stop Lane and Lewis then we need to tackle between the waist and the knees. Trying to horsecollar this guys to the ground is the wrong way to go about it.

And I'm picturing Grixby slowing Lane down just enough for Carriker to catch up and Decapitate him.

Literally.... Carriker will separate his head from his shoulders.

:) :bonez
