3rd and short

The philosophy now is to pass to establish the run. However, this is impossible wt a 50% QB at the helm who reverts back to his last year form - throwing off his back foot, lobbing passes up in the air, not able to throw a way the ball wtout getting intercepted, etc. We should be establishing the run to generate a passing game. But it appears we don't have the will or fire power to do so. Line play has been inept and our best RB is not in the game.

One of the 3rd & short passes was a great call, sure fire TD to Newby that our 3 year starting QB threw out of bounds (Newby still had a shot at it). Sometime the calls at there but the execution isn't.

I don't believe we have seriously tried to establish the running game in most of the games so far. You must run and run and run. I would suggest you run the ball on first down atleast 75% of the time thru the first 3 quarters of the game, NO matter what the result, assuming we atleast average 3 yards per carry. Now, this assumes we use good playcalling with some degree of creativity. One cannot run the same basic plays. That means you run some inside, outside, traps, options, etc. You need a diverse running game as well as a diverse passing game. We should be running at least 45% of the time on 2nd downs. We should run atleast 40% of the time on 3rd downs with less than 5 to go. 25% runs on 3 and less than 7. Pass or run option on 3rd and less than 10. Throw 95% of time on 3 & 10 or more. Use draws and screens on 2nd and extra longs and 3rd and mediums.

This is true, it was a good play call TA had to wait a little for him to come open and then he threw it a little long. Why didn't they ever come back to it. I do think if they really wanted to line up and run out of an I formation and run outside powers, tosses with some Iso mixed in, they could run the ball.

DL and MR panic if they don't get immediate results with running the ball they want to immediately move onto the pass. Against Illinois Iowa and that Cinzari guy at one point in the first half had 36 yards on 16 carries, this was with about 6 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. They showed this graffic By the end of the game he had about 280 yards on 43 carries. He was able to do this because they were committed to running the ball and wore out the Illinois defense.

MR and DL do not have that amount of patients to do that. I very sure they want to run the ball if they can and have good results right away, but they aren't willing to pound away and wear out a defense.

But that's the problem. The lack of execution isn't just bone headedness. The quarterback isn't capable of executing the plays that are being called on a consistent basis. He just doesn't have the skills to do it consistently. That is what is maddening about it.

Those runs were on 3rd & 2 (well, one was on the 3rd & goal from the 4).

Something not quite told here is that 3rd & 2 = running down, 3rd & 3+ = passing down. Think that had to do with the looks given. Think it might not be just the one game where the down and distance broke down like this. It's neither unusual nor unfair (the Huskers couldn't even average 3 ypc overall, could they?), but the performance on 3rd and short passing has been atrocious, and I think *that* is a year-long trend.

Husker fans tend to act like 3 or 4 yards is basically sneak distance. Not true.

no but Langsdorf basically passes on 3rd down no matter what. I think its gone as far as other teams know he wont run 3 times in a row no matter what and wont run on 3rd down and play to those tendencies. The worst is when we got a third and 2 and close to or past midfield and its a spot where maybe you run it and consider going on fourth but we ran a pass and then punted into the endzone.
