Ron Prince's first season as head coach at Kansas State took a downward turn at the end with lopsided losses to archrival Kansas in the regular-season finale and Rutgers in the Texas Bowl.
Now the spiral is continuing with personnel losses.
A source close to the Wildcat program confirmed Monday that two of Prince's assistants, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and running backs coach Tim Horton, are leaving the program. The source said more coaching defections are possible.
Earlier Monday, K-State athletic director Tim Weiser announced that longtime strength and conditioning coach Rod Cole also was leaving to take the same position at Texas A&M. Cole had been at K-State for 14 years and helped the team make 12 bowl appearances.
K-State sports information director Garry Bowman said Prince is attending a coaches convention in San Antonio and couldn't be reached for comment.
Morris will return to the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he coached before joining Prince in Manhattan. The Buccaneers announced Morris' hiring on their Web site, www.buccaneers.com, and said he will replace Greg Burns as defensive backs coach. The Bucs finished 19th in the NFL in pass defense last season.
Morris spent four years with the Bucs, including the last two as assistant defensive backs coach. He was a defensive quality control coach in 2002 when Tampa Bay won Super Bowl XXXVII.
Under Morris, K-State ranked 70th nationally in total defense, allowing 346 yards per game. His departure is even more significant because he served as the lead recruiter for many of the Wildcats' 2007 commitments.
Prior to the Texas Bowl, Morris gave no indication he was considering a move.
"I've got the same lofty goals (Prince) has," he said. "I've got high expectations for these guys. Whether they come true or not, I'm going to die trying to get 'em."
According to the Waco Herald-Tribune, K-State running backs coach Horton will return to the Air Force Academy, where he spent seven seasons before joining Prince in Manhattan.
The Herald-Tribune also reported that Baylor defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Wesley McGriff is leaving BU and will replace Horton at K-State...
