Q&A with Christian Peter

BY KEN HAMBLETON / Lincoln Journal Star

Christian Peter is one of the new inductees into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. The former Cornhusker who starred from 1993-95 helping lead the Huskers to national titles in 1994 and 1995 and a runner-up finish in 1993. He was All-Big Eight, honorable mention All-American and eventually played with the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears of the NFL. Peter will be coming to Lincoln for the induction ceremonies and honors during Nebraska’s Sept. 9 home game with Nicholls State.

You’re going into the Hall of Fame. What do you think?

I was surrounded by great, great players and coached by great coaches. I don’t deserve this. I just was in the right place at the right time.

What about the other guys from those years going in — Mike Minter, Chris Dishman, Jared Tomich, Tyrone Williams?

Dish was a load and nobody could move him. I had to play against him all the time. Minter was incredible and maybe as good a safety as there ever was. He’s still playing with the Panthers. Williams was just plain fast. And Tomich. Well, I don’t know how he got in the Hall of Fame. Geez. They must be giving it to anybody who can wear a helmet.

Tomich was that bad?

Horrible. Did he even letter?

What about playing alongside your brother, Jason, for a couple of those years?

He was pretty good, wasn’t he? Seriously, Tomich, Grant (Wistrom), Jason were the best there was. I was in the middle and they could hide my lack of talent. Every one of those guys on that defense was really good.

What were you doing in there in the first place? You only played one year of high school football.

That’s right. I was given a scholarship offer by Nebraska, Penn State and some others based on my scrimmage films because I had changed schools and couldn’t play as a senior.

When did it hit you that you could play Big Eight football?

About middle of my sophomore season, I could recognize formations and understood my responsibilities. Coach McBride was so patient and he made it possible for me to play.

What are you doing now?

I’m married. I’ve got two children and I’m working with Damian (his other younger brother) and loving being back on the East Coast. But I still love Nebraska and, who knows, I may move back there some day … as long as Tomich doesn’t move back there.
