A Day I've Long Waited For

Walk-on
Hey fellow Huskers,

Well I certainly picked a great time to return to the land of the living. Just returned from my second tour in Iraq and what a wonderful surprise gift, the firing of the surge of Husker land, Steve Pederson. Apparently it just happened in the last day or so. Heard the news when I landed in NYC yesterday. Hooray.

Obviously I've been out of touch for a long time and need a lot of catching up. Like the rest of you I've been mourning the season this year but have never given up hope for a turn around and maybe this is just the start.

First some background. Graduated in January 2003 In Lincoln, just about the time old Steverino was named as AD. Never liked the guy from the start. Kind of smarmy if you know what I mean. Acted like he owned the place from the first day. Something a little "odd" about him, but couldn't quite put my finger on it, but then again we didn't travel in the same circles :-)

Shipped out to Texas for a short tour, then off to Germany for a few years. Kept track of the Huskers during that time and watched Frankie rebuilding. Always thought he was a class act. Friendly and I knew a bunch of the players back in the day. Tough act following Coach TO. Then came the 2003 season and the firing of Solich. Didn't know what the hell to think. A coach goes 9-3 and gets fired ? What the hell is that. ?

Heard there was some bad blood between Frankie and Stevie, but there are always those rumors.

Off to Iraq and no time to think about much else but keeping my head down and my powder dry. Near the end of 2004 I meet a fellow Cornhusker from Beatrice who was a year or so behind me. He seems to know the REAL story behind the firing. Now before I go shooting my mouth off, I want to know what everyone else knows for REAL...Not vague rumors, but the real story. I've been out of the loop for a long long time, so maybe everyone else knows what really happened except me. I THINK I know the story about Solich too since that was not exactly a secret, but here again I'm not sure even about that.

So fill me in guys. Bring me up to date. I'd really appreciate it. As to the source of MY information. Let's say I'd put my life on the line for what this guy told me. He put his career on the line in even disclosing how he knew. "Don't Ask..Don't Tell" That should make that clear.

Right now the current wisdom is that the obvious is why he was fired. His decisions in hiring Callahan have directly lead to the greatest downfall of a modern football program. Pearlman stated that his decision, however, was made becasue of staff issues with Pederson, how people didn't like him, trust him, the donors didn't respect him, etc. He is a classic egotist who boarders on sociopathology. His one-man crusade to define Husker nation and probably one-up Tom Osborne in the process has failed and failed utterly. Presently our situation is fairly clear: Pederson is out, everyone wants Tom Osborne in as AD, and it's expected Callahan will be fired or resign sometime between now and the end of the season. Some rumors say two weeks, others three days––time will tell.

Bo Pelini is the most frequent name brought in on the Head Coaching discussion (current DC at LSU). Turner Gill creeps in there, another guy from Wyoming, and a mish-mash of college and pro coaches. Personally I think Callahan will be either this week or, provided another dissection from AtM, next week.

Anything else you need soldier?

Thanks for your reponse X... What I'm trying to find out is exactly why Pederson FIRED Solich. My source tells me it went far beyond Solich's performance as head coach, but rather to protect a deep dark secret that Solich possessed, perhaps the darkest secret a family man can have. Maybe this would shed some light on the personality of a man who would do most anything to protect his reputation, up to and including destroying a great football program.

I have heard the rumor circulated that Pederson's daughter had some sort of affair with Solich. I can't verify it in any way, but if true it would explain a lot about why the firing went the way it did. The current wisdom as to WHY it happened is more straightforward. Pederson is an egotist and he wanted to put his mark on the program. There is little other reason to fire a 9-3 head coach. His excuse of "not wanting the program to gravitate towards mediocrity" doesn't make sense in the light of a ten-win season, but regardless, Pederson pulled the plug, botched the succeeding search for a new HC, and hog-tied himself to Callahan's sinking ship from the start.

I wish I had better information for you, but not much has surfaced except for pure arrogant stupidity as to why Pederson fired Solich. It does make that other juicy rumor a little more believable, but I can't verify it so I don't accept it as anything but a strange possibility in Pederson's Playhouse.

I have no idea about who she was or what the circumstances might have been. It was just something someone told me and it's pure rumor and speculation. Nothing has ever been proven about it, so please, don't take it as fact or even a likelihood.

Just did a quick check and absolutely not possible that IF Solich did have an affair (which is questionable at best) it could not have been with Pederson's daughter who would have been a Freshman at the time. She may not even have been at the U, but more than likely at Wesleyan.

I'd heard those rumors about an affair/and a preg as well, but never heard anything substaniating them. Much like the rumors of Solich being arrested for a DUI while at Ohio. Those became completely unfounded when hair samples showed he'd been drugged hours before his arrest. Those have become a matter of record and the case was dismissed. I looked it up and so can you.

As to other involving Pederson.....Still waiting for someone who KNOWS to put a capper on this one.

GREAT to hear that TO is going to step in as AD. This is one honorable guy. Heard before leaving Iraq that the Republicans had all but promised him Ben Nelson's seat if he wanted it, but he turned them down out to loyalty to Nelson in the evbent Nelson chose to run again. Sorry as hell that Chuck Hagel is giving up his seat. The GI's best friend from Nebraska without a doubt.

Yeah, I heard it was like a secretary or something... not a student. I don't really have any reason to buy it... but if anyone has The Real Ultimate Truf™, I'd listen.
